Biography

Dr Crinela Pislaru is Senior Lecturer in the Engineering and Technology department at the University of Huddersfield, UK. She joined the University of Huddersfield in January 1998 after beginning her academic career in Transilvania University Brasov, Romania. She received her PhD in Control Engineering from the University of Huddersfield, UK in 2001 and MSc in Multimedia and E-learning from the School of Education and Profesional Development, University of Huddersfield in 2008.

Crinela is the Head of the Pedagogical Research group within the School and was awarded the status of Chartered Engineer and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy as recognition of her professional expertise. She has been actively contributing to EU programmes (Tempus, Leonardo da Vinci) on educational and e-learning subjects. She is a member of the executive board for IET Yorkshire region and Chair of IET West Yorkshire network.

Dr Pislaru has more than 15 years experience of teaching in HE and her main aim is to continuously enrich teaching through research and innovation in subject knowledge and pedagogy. She is the module leader for two MSc courses (Embedded controllers, Modelling Electromechanical Control Systems) and has been successfully supervising undergraduate, MSc and PhD projects

Crinela has an active current profile in international-level research, a track record of success in securing research funding, as well as specialised university-level expertise and achievement in control engineering, mechatronics, rail research and Engineering education.

She was Co-investigator to two EPSRC projects (involving international industrial collaborators such as Renishaw plc, Cincinnati Machine Tools, Kistler Instruments, Heidenhain, Bridgeport, Yamazaki, Siemens Automation and Drives, Newall Electronics) and worked on a DTI Knowledge Transfer Network (UCLAN) on sensors and condition monitoring practices. She has pioneered a novel algorithm for the identification of modal parameters of CNC machine tool feed drives based on Wavelet theory.

Dr Pislaru is an active member of Diagnostics Engineering Centre EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology working with Rolls-Royce, Cummins Turbo Technology, David Brown Gears Ltd, Optima Control Solutions Ltd., etc. and the total amount of funds for these research projects is over 600K. Also she currently co-ordinates rail research activities within the Diagnostic Engineering Research Centre.

Crinela is the author of over 90 refereed publications and reviewer for several internationally leading journals. Her current research explores issues in the fields of intelligent control systems; rail vehicle dynamics; estimation of vehicle-track dynamics, wear and adhesion; expert systems; mechatronic technologies; on-line real-time machinery fault detection; automated and adaptive diagnostics and prognostics; wireless self-calibrating sensors; self-maintenance of sensorless electrical drives.

Dr Pislaru’s pedagogical research is focused on the underpinning knowledge and behaviours needed for academic staff to work across boundaries, attract and engage industry and successfully guide and support the development of a sustainable engineering and informatics workforce.
