Biography

Having a first degree from Edinburgh University in Mathematics, I went on to study Engineering Control Systems and Metrology at Masters level, and then went on to complete a PhD in modelling the errors of machine tools and non-Cartesian machines.

My research career has been focussed on evaluating and improving the performance of machine tools in terms of their build-geometry, control and response to external influences, such as temperature. A necessary part of this is has been a scientific approach to the measurement of the errors on the machine and of the resulting manufactured part. I have therefore been deeply involved in the errors and uncertainties associated with a wide array of measurement tools, such as coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), comparator gauges, laser interferometers, laser trackers, etc.

The work we do in our research group has always been in collaboration with industrial partners, from machine tool and instrument manufacturers to end-users. We seek to tackle their everyday problems, while undertaking a parallel research plan that can overcome the perceived problems of the future.

Research and Scholarship

The research work we undertake in the CPT is driven by the needs of industry and takes us to many high-profile companies throughout the UK and abroad. My work concentrates on improving the output of manufacturing systems by analysing the equipment used to produce parts. My area of special interest is investigating the strategies for avoidance, measurement and correction of errors in CNC machine tools.

Our research group has a significant level of expertise in measurement and compensation of geometric, thermal, dynamic and load-dependent errors. I have been integral to the success of the University of Huddersfield’s Volumetric Compensation System (VCS), which can be used for compensating all the repeatable errors in machine tools.

I am currently undertaking research to determine the optimum process for machine measurement that will be able to take into account the combination of all the errors that affect positioning accuracy. One of the areas of interest this subject presents is to quantify the usefulness of the data when considering the uncertainty of the individual measurements.

Much of our work involves a need for non-standard measurements. Most of our tests use standard metrology equipment, such as laser interferometers, non-contact displacement transducers, precision levels, etc. However, exotic methods of applying this equipment can produce some interesting challenges. The majority of our acquired data requires comprehensive analysis, for which I use EXCEL, MATLAB or programs I write in Visual Basic.

Our team is well respected within industry for the technical ability we bring to measurement and process analysis. We provide training in the use of measurement equipment and educate machine users in the impact that errors can have on their production accuracy and efficiency.

My research and industrial experiences are a major influence on my teaching, contributing to all elements of my taught modules and informing new research projects at postgraduate level.
