Biography

Qualifications: CertEd, BA(Hons), MSc, MPhil, PhD, FHEA

Roy Fisher is an educational researcher and post-compulsory sector teacher educator who has been a member of the School of Education and Professional Development since 1996, having previously worked in the School on secondment from Huddersfield Technical College (1992-1994). He was first appointed as a further education lecturer in 1978 and went on to accumulate 15 years further education service in various roles. Roy's current responsibilities include managing the quality assurance within the School, including the extensive provision which operates through the Consortium for Post-Compulsory Education and Training (CPCET). He is a member of the School's Graduate Education Group, University's Standing Committee on Collaborative Provision and the Quality and Standards Advisory Group.

As an undergraduate, Roy read history at Aberyswyth. He later developed an interest in sociology, and, through a Master's degree at Bradford, specifically in the sociology of education. His MPhil, undertaken in the Department of Sociology at the University of Leeds, reviewed Marxist contributions to the sociology of education. His doctoral research, (at Huddersfield), brought together his long term interests in history and sociology through a socio-historical study of the vocational curriculum in England between 1974 and 1994. This study employed the ideas of Gramsci, Althusser, Foucault and Lyotard to provide a multi-perspectival analytical account of vocationalism. Since 1998, Roy has been Co-Convenor of the Learning and Skill Research Network in the Yorkshire and Humberside Region. He is a member of the British Educational Research Association and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

He is, with Professor James Avis, co-director of the Centre for Research in Post-Compulsory Education at the University and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Vocational Education and Training.
