Jean Hatton is a Senior Lecturer in youth and community work. She has been teaching full-time at the University of Huddersfield since 2004.
Jean began her career as a Youth and Community Worker in 1982 within the voluntary sector in Inner London. It was whilst working in the East End of London that she began to specialise in using outdoor education as a tool in personal development. This continues to be an area of personal, and sometimes professional, interest.
Jean has been involved in Youth and Community Work training and education since 1990 when she began working in Kirklees as a Youth work trainer and outdoor pursuits instructor. She has undertaken a wide range of roles in many different settings within the context of informal education, including developing a mentoring project and acting as an evaluation worker in a primary health care setting.
Jean is responsible for the management of the Fieldwork elements of all the Youth and Community Work programmes at the University and teaches on the fieldwork modules as well as some of the academic module.

- How LGBTQ identity might impact on the ‘use of self’ within youth and community work and HE contexts
- The effects of dyslexia on the self-confidence of youth and community work students both in their academic and in their professional setting

Jean currently takes the lead in placement management on the Youth and Community Work degrees and in Admissions for the Undergraduate programe.
Teaching and Professional Activities
Jean’s major focus is on the teaching of field work skills both within the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Youth and Community work courses. Linked to this she leads on the development of links with the Youth and Community work profession locally and regionally so that our students can be sure of excellent placement opportunities.
Jean is also module leader for Perspectives on Learning and Development: a Foundation level module focusing on the challenge of understanding how young people learn and develop and the relevant links to a range of Professional policy and practice developments.
Jean also contributes to the teaching of the ‘Communities in Theory and Practice’ module at Intermediate and Higher level taking particular interest in students’ understanding of community organisations and how they operate in the 21st century.
