Professor Zhongyu (Joan) Luj.lu@hud.ac.uk | 01484 472922
Professor Lu is in the Department of Informatics. She was a Team Leader of IT Department in an industrial company before she jointed university. She has successfully conducted two industrial projects in the area of XML and database systems, collaborating with Beijing University, China, during her working in the company.
Her research interests include XML technology, Object Oriented System Development, Agent technology, data management system, information access/retrieval/visulization/representation, security issues and Internet Computing. Some projects are directly linked to industrial interests, e.g. XML security with NPL, XML database with Hydro Logic Ltd, XML graphics with Cummins Turbo Technology (CTT).
Currently she is supervising PhD candidates in the above areas and has been invited and acted as an external examiner for PhD candidates in the areas of XML technology, database systems and distributing systems for three UK universities.
She is Guest Professor for two international universities: The Shaanxi University of Science and Technology, China, Guest Professor: School of Software (one of 35 key state software schools), Yunnan University, China.

Professor Lu's extensive research covers XML technology, Information and knowledge engineering across disciplines as science and technology, education and environmental industry. Since she jointed the university from industry, she has developed a new research area, XML in science and technology. Specifically for this area, she has been an invited speaker for an industrial oriented event, XMLWorld, in 2002, USA, National Physical laboratory, NPL, London, School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, Beijing University, China, School of Software, Yunnan University and School of, Faculty of Information Engineering and Automation, Kunming University of Science and Technology, Faculty of Computing and Information Engineering, Shaanxi University of Science and Technology, China, 2004.
Professor Lu has been the Founder and a Programme Chair for International XML Technology workshop, XMLTech for 6 years since 2003 to 2008 in USA and serves for other four international conference chair, regular paper reviewer for international journals and committee member for 14 International Conferences in the subject area. Mostly they are organized by International journals and prestigious professional bodies, such as four conferences published their proceedings by IEEE, three published proceedings by LNCS, Springer, two organized by International Journals. She has awarded "Achievement Awards" by The World Academy of Science, USA, for 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007, respectively. The ratio for this award is 50 over 2000 each year by The World Academy of Science, USA.
Professor Lu also involves both internal and external research projects. Recent EU project is Edumecca, specialized in XML technology and mobile computing. Awarded funds are total in about 495,125.00 Euros, with other four EU countries.
Achievement Awards by The World Academy of Science, USA, for 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007, respectively, which has the ratio of 50 over 2000 people each year; invited speaker for an industrial oriented event, XMLworld, in 2002, USA, and National Physical laboratory, NPL, London, in 2004, for the topic of XML in science and technology.
