Professor TL McCluskey

Biography

After obtaining a BSc and MSc in Mathematics, I started work as a commercial scientist modelling heat flow through metals using analytical and numerical methods. Following this I led the development of a computer-aided design software package which was sold commercially to mechanical engineering companies and used as an aid to technical drawing and design. By this time I was interested in Computing as a subject area, and so moved to my first job as a lecturer in Computer Science at (what was then) Hatfield Polytechnic. After only two years at Hatfield I moved on to lecturing at City University, where I obtained a PhD by Publication. My research there in the area of Artificial Intelligence led to contract research with the Civil Aviation Authority and later NATS Ltd. This involved formalising air traffic separation criteria for flight plans over the North Atlantic. After 8 years in London I moved to Huddersfield where I hold the Chair of Software Technology.

When not being an academic, I am an active fell runner, and I sing and perform in a local community choir.

Research & Scholarship

I lead the department's Informatics Research Group and the Knowledge Engineeing and Intelligent Interfaces sub-group. My research interests include automated plan generation, semantic technologies, information extraction, knowledge engineering, machine learning, data mining, requirements validation and formal specification.

Other Contributions

I am one of 12 members of the ICAPS council who oversee the yearlt ICAPS international conference series
on planning and scheduling, including its satellite workshops, competitions and doctoral events. ICAPS was the
amalgamation of the AIPS and ECP conferences.
I have twice served on the EPSRC electoral college.
I have played a leading role the foundation of a research area called "knowledge
engineering for AI planning" through the development of a comprehensive EU roadmap, a new biannual international
competition, a special issue on the subject in the Knowledge Engineering Review journal, and the production of the
award winning software ‘GIPO’.
I supervise 7 PhD students, have had 9 past succesful supervisons, and I have been a PhD examiner 8 times.
My group's software called GIPO was the winner in the ‘general tools’ category of the 1st International Competition on Knowledge
Engineering for AI Planning, Monterey, California, June 2005. GIPO was a legacy of the Planform project, its main
author being Mr Ron Simpson
