After my first degree in Computing I worked for a year as a COBOL programmer with British Steel. I then returned to Sheffield University to study for an MSc Information Systems which led to my PhD in IR (Information Retrieval). My research was in the implementation and evaluation of novel algorithms for text-based retrieval. The algorithms in question don 't look particularly novel anymore, they are at the heart of Internet search engines such as Google. I like to think that some of the Google programmers read my papers and that I contributed in some small way to the vast fortunes they have made.
I completed my PhD in 1989 and took up a teaching position at the University of Sheffield in the Department of Information Studies. I left Sheffield to take up my current position at the University of Huddersfield in 1993. During my years in Huddersfield I have been involved in research into the application of object oriented techniques to the development of IR applications; the application of genetic algorithms to IR; the development of agile systems development methods and the application of pedagogical patterns to the design of teaching materials.
My current teaching interests are in the areas of Model-Driven Architecture, Web Programming and Database Development. I am Course Leader and Admissions Tutor for the school's Information Systems courses.
Outside of the University I enjoy fell-walking and various aspects of family life (I have two children). I used to be a keen amateur actor and have been a member of various theatre groups over the years.
My research and teaching interests share a focus on how to develop information systems. I am interested in this from the perspective of both developers and end-users.
From the developer 's perspective I am interested in investigating ways in which we can construct software systems that model real-world situations and are adaptable so that they can evolve as those situations change. The research issues in this area relate to technical features of modern programming languages and the expressive power of the Unified Modelling Language (UML). I have taught the UML at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and to a number of local organisations.
From the end-user perspective I am interested in designing information systems that accommodate people's differing needs and styles of information use. I take the view that information systems development is fundamentally a social activity so I am interested in techniques that help us to understand the organisational and social context in which information systems will be used.
Contact me if you would like to know more about the UML or if you would like me to develop a web site or database application. I like to use real-world projects in my teaching and my students have experience of working with HTML, JavaScript, PHP, ASP.NET etc. We can deliver high quality applications at little cost.
