I returned to study as a mature student in 1996 when I started a degree in Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Bradford. After graduating with first class honours I started a PhD programme in the School of Computing and Engineering at the University of Huddersfield in 1999 under the direction of Professor John Mason.
The research for my PhD thesis mainly concentrated on the reconstruction of surfaces using radial basis functions. The title of my thesis was "Radial Basis and Support Vector Machine Algorithms for Approximating Discrete Data. " The problems that I studied included structured and semi-structured data approximation, support vector machines with radial kernels (for mixed noise distributions) and detecting and approximating fault lines using discrete Gaussian curvature techniques and thin plate spline analysis.
I completed my PhD in 2002 and after spending three years as a research fellow I became a full time senior lecturer.
Outside of University I enjoy watching Halifax RLFC with a passion and spending as much time as I can with my wife and four children.
My current research interests are split. As a member of the Informatics Research Group I have been working closely with colleagues at Huddersfield, and at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in London, on the construction of novel approximation estimators. We are primarily concerned with the reconstruction of curves and surfaces from discrete data that exhibits several different sources of noise. The use of traditional norms for error minimization is not effective in these circumstances and other, often non-linear, estimators need to be considered. Our work has extended traditional mixed noise estimators, such as the Huber M-estimator and the epsilon insensitive estimator used in support vector machine regression. Our main focus has been on the implementation of algorithms for successfully applying these estimators.
Secondly, I have been working closely with the Automotive Engineering Group in constructing mathematical models to determine the in-plane and out-of-plane displacements of a disk brake generating noise and also on the possible effects of thermal disk deformation in causing brake judder. The research has involved working closely with John Fieldhouse and Chris Talbot.
I was a member of the Scientific and Organising Committees for the Algorithms for Approximation Conference, held in Ambleside in the Lake District from August 30 to September 4, 2009. Further details can be found at the following site: http://www2.le.ac.uk/departments/mathematics/extranet/conferences/a4a6-algorithms-for-approximation-vi I am currently co-organiser of the The 29th Workshop of the UK Planning and Scheduling Special Interest Group, Huddersfield, December 2011
