Biography

Enes graduated in Chemical Engineering from the University of Leeds in 2005, and subsequently obtained a PhD from the same university in 2009 under the supervision of Professor Mojtaba Ghadiri. The project was sponsored by EPSRC and Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD). He then worked as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate at Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) in collaborative partnership with the University of Leeds.

His research focused on investigating the scope for direct compression for tableting and variability of the dosage forms by developing an electrostatic portfolio for BMS in-house compounds. In 2011, Enes was appointed Research Fellow in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Huddersfield.

Research & Scholarship

Improvement in the understanding of particle properties enables the rational design of formulations, and opens door to the possibility of utilising more efficient manufacturing routes for tablets, such as direct compression technology. An improved understanding of tribo-electric properties and how they relate to individual powders will contribute to the understanding of these issues, thereby enabling the specification of particles with desired properties for optimum manufacture.

Enes's research has focused on studying the electrostatic phenomena in particulate systems. He has been working in recent years on tribo-electric charging of bulk pharmaceutical powders, resulting in development of charge measurement device and characterisation methodology. His research at University of Huddersfield will utilise the device developed previously, which is commercially unavailable, and the knowledge available in particle technology to generate better tools for controlling electrostatic charging. This will, in turn, facilitate the development of new formulations and reduce potential segregation problems. This is of great interest to industry and academia.

In summary, he has been actively working on the following topics:

  • Investigating flowability of powders using annular shear cell by measuring flow factor and unconfined yield stress
  • Studying the effect of shear deformation on electrostatic charge of pharmaceutical powders
  • Characterising segregation induced by tribo-electric charging for binary mixtures
  • Numerical simulations based on the Distinct Element Method (DEM) to predict the charge built up of an assemblage of beads inside the shaking device
  • Measurement of powder resistivity
  • Dispersion of powders: for the application of dry system size analysis, and dry powder inhaler.
  • Effect of particle dispersion on electrification
  • Compression behaviour of the single and bulk particles (in terms of deformation, compaction, crushing) and its relationship with electrostatic charge.
