Biography

Ted Charsley joined the University in 1997 when he moved his research group from Leeds Metropolitan University to form the Centre for Thermal Studies. The Centre provides a dedicated commercial contract research facility using thermal analysis, heat flow calorimetry and allied techniques and works on a wide range of projects for industry and government in the UK and Europe. He has a BSc in Chemistry from the University of London and a PhD from the University of Salford. Prior to joining Leeds Polytechnic, where he was awarded a Personal Chair in 1992, he was Research Director of Stanton Redcroft Ltd, the UK thermal analysis equipment manufacturer.

He is a Past President of the International Confederation for Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (ICTAC) and is currently a member of the ICTAC Advisory Committee. He is joint Co-Chairman of the Steering Committee of the International Symposium on the Heat Flow Calorimetry of Energetic Materials and is a Past-Chairman of the European Symposium on Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry and the Thermal Methods Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Thermochimica Acta and is the Co-Editor of the Royal Society Publication "Thermal Analysis-Techniques and Applications". In 2006 he was awarded the Lifetime Honorary Membership of ICTAC and in 2007 the Mettler-Toledo Award of the North American Thermal Analysis Society.

Research & Scholarship

Current research interests include:
  • The application of thermal methods to the characterisation of the solid-state chemistry of metal-oxidant pyrotechnic systems.

  • The role of isothermal microcalorimetry in studying the ageing of materials at ambient temperature in the presence of moisture.

  • Industrial applications of thermal analysis and scanning / isothermal microcalorimetry

  • Development of new thermal analysis techniques, including sample controlled thermal methods.

  • Standardisation and calibration methods in thermal analysis. Application of differential scanning calorimetry to the determination of accurate equilibrium temperatures of transition of inorganic salts.
