Biography

Heather is a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Visual and Oral History Research. She joined the university in 2012. She studied for her BA and PhD at the University of Exeter and her PCGE at Lancaster. She has taught at Bretton Hall, York St John University, University of Leeds and Manchester Metropolitan University where she was a Research Fellow with the Manchester Centre for Regional History and the North West Film Archives. She has been Visiting Fellow at the University of Calgary and has held honorary positions with Birkbeck College and The School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She will be a Visiting Scholar at the Courtauld Institute 2013-14.

Research & Scholarship

Heather's research is concerned with archive film and changing amateur visual practice.  She is particularly interested in the rise of amateur cine photography from its first pioneers, through its years of peak popularity to its contemporary meaning and significance. She is also interested in the relationship between visual memories, identities and community-history making.

Her book, Amateur Film: Meaning and Practices, 1927-1977 (Manchester University Press, 2012) drew upon non-fiction film collections at the North West Film Archive, oral testimonies and the specialist hobby literature published from the 1920s onwards. It discusses formal and informal aspects of amateur practice, and uncovers many forgotten films and neglected filmmakers.

Heather has written many chapters and articles that explore aspects of amateur practice in relation to holidays, leisure, memories, identity, family relations, social issues, digital access and how landscape meanings change over time.

Current research focuses on how women made and showed cine films and uses oral testimonies, film and printed materials to reclaim a strand of neglected amateur visual practice.  Other current writing  explores links between amateur film and  regional identity, media archaeology and the early teaching of history.

Heather was involved with the EU funded Marie Curie project digital memories (2010) and past outreach projects include Moving Memories: Tales from Moss Side and Hulme and Reel Times, Turnpike Gallery, Leigh (2010). She contributed to the first Manchester Histories Festival, and the BBC series, Reel Histories of Britain (2011). Currently she is  involved with the Holmfirth Film Festival  and developing various community projects about amateur filmmakers.

She has also explored links between indigenous culture in tourism and in film, with particular reference to Canada’s aboriginal filmmakers. Screening Culture: Constructing Image and Identity (2003) linked indigenous and non-indigenous perspectives on film in a survey of cultural representation in moving image. This work sprang in part from studying indigenous cultural tourism initiatives in Western Canada where early archive footage often contributed to museum exhibits. Finding ways to reconnect and relocate archived visual histories with wider audiences remains a strong strand through other projects that Heather would like to take forward collaboratively.

up to and following World War II. Cine enthusiasts, particularly in the pre-war period, tended to be male, white and middle class, although exceptions exist, and they tended to travel with their cameras much as earlier generations had documented their experiences in written and artistic form. Despite their amateur status, they were often very professional in their approach to cinematography and they produced material for a range of domestic and public audiences on varied topics and in different genres. Specialist publications and the rapid growth of local amateur film societies fostered the rise of an active non-professional film movement; the result is a highly distinctive although neglected component of film history. With reference to materials held at the North West Film Archives in Manchester, England, this discussion considers the rise of non-professional filmmaking at the regional level during the decades before and after the second world war. Making and showing home movies is placed within various socio-cultural contexts. The imagery discloses much about visual practice, including filmmakers' perceptions and their relationships with different kinds of subject matter. The making of holiday footage, in Mediterranean settings, and its subsequent screening in domestic or public places, connects with broader issues of visualization, social practice and leisure-related consumption. the overall young age of Canada's Aboriginal population, it is unsurprising that so much concern focuses upon trying to find ways to meet the diverse and complex present and future needs of children more appropriately than in the past. Over ten years after the grim findings of No Quiet Place (1982) in which child welfare practice was likened to 'the road to hell […] paved with good intentions and the child welfare system was the paving contractor', the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples (1996) highlighted the continuing challenges faced by Aboriginal children in rural and urban settings. Over the same period, the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), has produced material in both documentary and fictional form on diverse aspects of Aboriginal childhood experience. This presentation uses NFB material to consider how filmic versions of Aboriginal children's experiences are constructed and presented to their viewers. Imagery, sound, narrative themes and filming offer contrasting perspectives and prompt questions about the production, consumption and interpretation of film material on children where opportunities discursive practices associated with aspects of political, socio-economic and cultural relations between Canada’s First Nations and the larger society over the past decade. Attention is drawn to discourses of reconciliation and healing, life-skills and survival economics and cultural revival prevalent during the 1990s, both in and away from the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. Section Two identifies the key themes that run through this multi-disciplinary collection of writings by Aboriginal and also non-Aboriginal writers based in and outside Canada. Recurring links between aspects of changing policies, languages and identities are identified. Drawing upon perspectives from linguistics, law, sociology and popular culture, Section Two highlights elements of continuity and change within contemporary Aboriginal experience, namely the emergence of Aboriginal rock music, demographic shift and urbanising lifestyles, language practice and policy, culturally appropriate curriculum design and the use of official terminology used in relation to Travel narratives produced by early camera-touting enthusiasts may be likened to preceding forms of travel experience depicted in art and written form, but important differences occur too. This discussion explores issues of place representation, ethnography and perceptions of regional identities, cultures, and histories through reference to amateur holiday footage filmed in the Balkans in 1934. Analysis of rural and urban scenes, traditions, and itinerary, as well as the cinematic processes found within this filmic travelogue, are related to earlier outsiders’ responses and contemporary travel texts including guides, diaries and other genres of travel literature. Contemporary debates on post-conflict identity in the Balkan region and tourism history within the Mediterranean, as well as socio-cultural and aesthetic aspects of non-professional film-making form a wider context for this focus upon Balkan imagery. fortification affected the nature of urban development in European towns, and how the eventual removal of anachronistic defences provided opportunities for large scale urban redevelopment, extension and embellishment. Today, attitudes have come full circle. Many of the fortification remnants that escaped demolition in the nineteenth and earlier twentieth centuries are now much cherished as touchstones of the past. Among the many factors which have influenced the evolution of post-medieval urban form in Britain, defensive considerations have exerted a relatively slight effect compared with their impact on the continent of Europe. The well-preserved Tudor defences of the frontier town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, the hastily built Civil 'War outworks at Newark-on-Trent and defensive installations at naval bases such as Portsmouth are exceptional in a British context. By the sixteenth century in England, most medieval town walls were falling into ruin or had already been demolished and built over. On the other hand, in parts of continental Europe where military strategy was still founded on systems of fortified towns, defensive considerations remained continuing influences on urban form through The following discussion identifies some practical and intellectual issues associated with using archival film in the study of historical and geographical change. Mapping the unofficial sources of historical knowledge produces ever-changing versions of events, people and places through time and space. Early amateur film is one way of tapping into people's memories about themselves and how they relate to others in contrasting contexts. These images allow for the kind of knowledge which. as Raphael Samuel suggests, creeps in sideways as a by-product of studying something else. Historians. geographers and others often revel in the kaleidoscopic gaze given by each twist of view as different stances, sources and situations provoke alternative interpretations. The camera lens of the early amateur film-maker framed subject-matter now laden with issues of racism, sexism and colonialism. This article considers how amateur film may relate to and inform contemporary interests in spatial and social relations, as well as changing notions of place and identity. As with most sources of evidence, however, amateur film poses both practical and intellectual challenges. Both the quantity and the quality of amateur footage raise important questions for archivists of moving imagery as they address problems of storage. conservation and access. Travel narratives produced by early camera-touting enthusiasts may be likened to preceding forms of travel experience depicted in art and written form, but important differences occur too. This discussion explores issues of place representation, ethnography and perceptions of regional identities, cultures, and histories through reference to amateur holiday footage filmed in the Balkans in 1934. Analysis of rural and urban scenes, traditions, and itinerary, as well as the cinematic processes found within this filmic travelogue, are related to earlier outsiders’ responses and contemporary travel texts including guides, diaries and other genres of travel literature. Contemporary debates on post-conflict identity in the Balkan region and tourism history within the Mediterranean, as well as socio-cultural and aesthetic aspects of non-professional film-making form a wider context for this focus upon Balkan imagery. footage produced by two very different filmmakers who filmed in Ordsall, Salford during the 1960s. Their respective footage covers a period of profound social and physical change associated with housing clearance and urban renewal schemes. This article, which is based upon archival film footage in the North West Film Archive at Manchester Metropolitan University, seeks to convey the richness and multi-facetted nature of this footage and to highlight its value in the historical exploration of identity formation. The piece begins with a brief consideration of archival film as a source of historical evidence and associated issues of interpretation. This is followed by an introduction to the locality that features in the two filmmakers’ work and brief reference to how it has been represented in the past. Attention then turns to each of the filmmakers: first, John Michael Goodger, former lecturer at the University of Salford, who made a trilogy of films to chart the changing character of Ordsall in the late 1960s; second, Ralph Brookes, an amateur home movie maker who also documented the transformation of the terraced streets around where he lived. These contrasting versions of Ordsall highlight some of the challenges offered by using film in a study of regional identities. As the Mediterranean rapidly regained its pre-war popularity as a travel destination, evidence of its more militarised character and strategic significance recur in the glimpses of veterans and uniformed service personnel, vessels, medals and border securities found in interwar amateur film footage. Deliberate filming of discord is much rarer and gives particular value to the focus here upon the work of an amateur filmmaker who visited Spain during the Civil War on behalf of the Society of Friends (Britain's Quaker movement). The article discusses scenes of relief work, people queuing at feeding centres and refugee movements, and places the footage within a wider consideration of filmic responses to the Civil War and international relief operations. The relevance of such amateur imagery for its contemporary home audience is also explored, in relation to prevailing perceptions of the Mediterranean and, more widely, within a context of socially engaged filmmaking that links to strong British documentary making traditions during the interwar years. Discussion forms part of a broader study of Mediterranean imagery shot by British home movie makers during the 1920s and 1930s and recently studied at the North West Film Archive, Manchester Esteem

Heather edited the British Journal of Canadian Studies (2009- 2012) and was on the editorial board of Landscapes (2001-2011). Currently she is part of the editorial team for Manchester Region History Review  (2006 onwards), Oral History Journal (2012 onwards) and the forthcoming Journal of Amateur Cinema Studies (2013).

Within the British Association of Canadian Studies (1993-2012),  she was Vice President, a councillor and member of various strategic reviews,  and undertook different DFAIT-funded initiatives and visits to Canada.

She has helped to run many conferences and seminars, held numerous small awards and travel scholarships that  include the  British Council, Krasna-Krausz, British Academy Small Grants and Prix de Quebec and she has examined research degrees for the universities of  Kent and Sheffield.

Past media appearance/consultancy includes BBC Nation on Film (2006-07), Reel Histories of Britain (2010-11) various independent production companies, and local press.

She contributed to Moving Memories: Tales from Moss Side and Hulme  (BUFVC Learning on Screen award and THES nominee , 2010); Reel Times, Turnpike Galley, Leigh, Lancs,2010) and various initiatives with the North West Film Archives at Manchester Metropolitan University (2005-2011).

She contributes to anonymous peer reviews and manuscript submissions for different publishers and journals and is on the steering committee for the AHRC Children in Amateur Media in Scotland project, 2010-2014.

Research Degree Supervision

Heather is happy to supervise postgraduate work or form part of a supervisory team, or act as external examiner in areas which connect with any of her research interests.  She welcomes informal  enquiries to discuss ideas at any stage, particularly in the following areas:

Amateur and archival film interpretation

Building links between communities and moving image collections

Personal narratives, visual memories, oral histories and community outreach

Travel footage, tourism histories and place identity

Promotional imagery and twentieth century change

Previously, Heather has co-supervised and been an External Examiner on topics in Canadian Studies and film.
