Professor Annie Toppinga.e.topping@hud.ac.uk | 01484 473974
Annie trained as a Registered Nurse at the Royal Free Hospital, London in 1979, and worked mainly in general surgery and intensive care before finding her home as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London . Annie graduated from the University of Surrey in 1987 after completing a part time degree in Nursing Studies. She began her second career in higher education at South Bank Polytechnic (1988-1991). Annie has worked at various Yorkshire Universities: Huddersfield (1991-1998), Leeds (1998-2001), Bradford (2001-2007) before returning to Huddersfield in 2007 as Director of the Centre for Health & Social Care Research. She is a Huddersfield alumna having completed both Postgraduate Certificate of Education (1995) and Doctor of Philosophy (2001) at the University.
Current research interests include public health, wellbeing in health and illness and the organisation of care in particular identification of the challenge of transitions across primary and secondary care. Public health, delays in seeking health care, enhancing care delivery through integrated care, the impact of technologies, service design, and workforce education for improving seamless care. These interests are intrinsically linked to her long commitment to enhancing the patients and service users and carers experience of health and social care.
At a national level Annie is Chair of the RCN Research Society Steering Committee, a member of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Academic Training (CAT) Scheme for Nurses and AHPs Implementation Group and Co-Director of the Academy of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting Research (UK) Mentorship Scheme for early career researchers
