Ruth is a Principal Lecturer and Head of Undergraduate Management provision in the Business School. Ruth has worked in the education sector for twenty years and joined the University of Huddersfield in 2005.

Committed to the student experience, Ruth has developed undergraduate management courses to ensure they meet the needs of students by helping them to develop the skills and knowledge required by businesses today. Ruth has been nominated by students on multiple occasions for the staff Thank You awards and has been a finalist for her exceptional student support.

While at the university Ruth has successfully lead a number of teaching and learning initiatives on the course including a Personal Development Planning for Employability project and the launch of a pre-induction social network specifically for new management students. Ruth has been awarded external funding from the Higher Education Academy with an Individual Teaching Grant to promote the benefits of sandwich placements at university and support students in applying. Influenced by her own experience of sandwich placements while at university Ruth believes every student should have the opportunity of gaining work experience to support their studies.

Ruth’s commercial background is based in the finance sector, working for a large high street bank. Accompanied by business and research qualifications, Ruth leads on modules examining the role of work in our society and the development of employability skills. Ruth is experienced in teaching and supporting international students and has taught in Hong Kong delivering her final year module at partner organisations.

Ruth is currently an external examiner at Leeds University Business School. She has also been an external examiner on course validations for the University of Middlesex and the University of Ulster.


Additionally she has reviewed books and journal articles in the field of management and employability including being a guest editor on a special edition of the journal Higher Education, Skills and Work-based Learning.

Research and Scholarship

Ruth’s research interests have focused on employability in the curriculum and the benefits of sandwich placements for undergraduate students including the impact on academic performance and employment upon completing a degree. Ruth’s currently working towards her PhD evaluating the influences of class, gender and ethnicity on student engagement with graduate employment opportunities.

Ruth organised a successful conference at the University of Huddersfield on Enhancing Employability through Placements in Higher Education. The event was oversubscribed and the day involved guest speakers from the UK, Canada and Australia as well as 20 papers sharing examples of projects and good practice of placement provision in the UK. Due to the high level of interest in placements in Higher Education Ruth was invited as guest editor on a special edition of the journal Higher Education, Skills and Work-based Learning. Ruth regularly reviews for this journal as well as The Journal of Work-Applied Management.

Through her work on employability with students Ruth was invited to join the development committee of a local charity.

Research Degree Supervision

Ruth has supervised dissertations at both undergraduate and masters level and has been involved in student research related to gender, employee engagement and behaviour in the workplace.

Enterprise Activities

Through leading the second year Management Skills and Personal Development for Employability module Ruth has co-worked with students on a number of live projects benefiting the third sector.Projects have included running events to fundraise for both local and national charities, running awareness campaigns and providing business advice for small local enterprises.

Administrative Responsibilities

Ruth is course leader and also admissions tutor for the undergraduate management degrees in the Department of People, Management and Organisations. This includes the following courses:

In addition Ruth sits on both the University Teaching and Learning Committee and School Teaching and Learning Committee.

Teaching and Professional Activities

Ruth is course leader for undergraduate management degrees and is responsible for two core modules. In year 2 Management Skills for Personal Development and Employability focuses on developing student skills for the workplace and involves live projects working with local organisations, allowing students to relate the theory learnt in the classroom to the real world. In the final year Ruth leads on Management, Work and Society examining a range of contemporary sociological issues in the workplace and their impact on both managers and employees.
