Biography

Professor Mike Kagioglou became the Dean of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Huddersfield on the 4th of November 2013. The School consists of three innovative departments: Art and Communications; Fashion and Textiles; and Architecture and 3D design. He was previously at the University of Salford where he was the Head of the School of Built Environment since 2009, the No.1 Research Power School in the last RAE for Architecture and the Built Environment.

Mike's career spans Engineering, Manufacturing, Creativity, Design, Architecture and the Built Environment, engaged in inter and multi-disciplinary research at a global level. Mike's commitment to inter and multidisciplinary endeavours was evident from the beginning of his academic career. He chose to undertake an Integrated Engineering Systems degree at Manchester Metropolitan University where he explored the integration of a number of disciplines around the development of New products. He then specialised in Advanced Manufacturing Systems at the Master's level where he coined his work on Design and New Product Development (NPD) working with SMEs and undertaking a placement within a precision Engineering company to get under the skin on how new products are developed, from conception to final market introduction and use. His PhD considered Process in general and NPD more specifically in a number of sectors and that was the point that he developed a strong interest in the Built Environment and worked as a research fellow in a major EPSRC funded project. Receiving his PhD in 2009 and upon finishing his National service, he joined the University of Salford as the Manager of the £8M EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) Salford Centre for Research and Innovation (SCRI) in the built and human environment. He became the Director of SCRI in 2008.

Mike's more recent work over the last 7-8 years focused on process issues in Healthcare Infrastructure and he is an Academic Director for the £11M EPSRC funded interdisciplinary IMRC in Health and Care Infrastructures Research and Innovation Centre (HaCIRIC). This collaborative centre broke new ground in emphasising the importance of the built environment in delivering healthcare outcomes. The centre is developing a Healthcare Infrastructure Forum to take its work forward. Mike's current research is around Healthcare infrastructure and better decision making in complex settings, following an outcomes/benefits based philosophy. He has published more than 150 academic referred papers, many industrial reports and two books. Mike has taken part in international evaluations and consultancy activity.

Mike is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Senior Associate of the Royal Academy of Medicine, and he is committed to creativity, professionalism, student experience and generation of new knowledge.

Research and Scholarship

1. Secure Urban Environments by Design. European Hippokrates Programme. With Prof. Rachel Cooper (PI) and Dr. Caroline Davey (£43,766). (2001-2002). The project involved 7 European countries and looked at the use of design as a means of providing secure built environments for society. This project was successful and resulted in a follow on EU funded project investigating the development of a European Resource directory for securing urban environments by design.

2. Network of Experts in Construction IT (NeCIT), with Professors Ghassan Aouad (PI), Yacine Rezgui, Grahame Cooper, Rachel Cooper and Bingu Ingirige, funded by the EPSRC (£19K) (2003-2004). The network aimed to develop a critical mass for construction IT in the UK to bid for EU funding. Various funding proposals were developed and the EPSRC post project review considered the outputs as significant.

3.Managing Change and Dependency funded by EPSRC (£204k) (2001-04) with Aouad, Barrett, Cooper, Goulding and Sexton.

4.ESRC/EPSRC transdisciplinary seminars with University of West of England and Loughborough University. (2003). Lead Academic from Salford. Involved the running of various national workshops looking at the learning across sectors for the benefits of construction, in our case.

5. University funding to invite International experts, Campus Fellowship. Lead Academic. (5K) (2003). Two experts from Chile and Brazil were invited and it resulted in 2 joint publications and a European research proposal under the ALFA mechanism.

6. Star Recruit proposal, with Professors Ghassan Aouad (PI), Peter Barrett, Rachel Cooper and Bingu Ingirige, funded by EPSRC (£545K) (2004-2009). This project has resulted in bringing to the UK the leading figure on Lean Construction from Finland and it has positioned Salford as the leading academic institution in the UK in this area.

7. Sustained Competitiveness in the UK Construction Sector: A Fresh Perspective, with Ghassan Aouad (PI), Peter Barrett, Brian Dangerfield, Peter McDermott (all University of Salford); Simon Austin, Andrew Dainty, Andrew Price, Tony Thorpe (Loughborough University); Stuart Green, Colin Gray and Will Hughes (all University of Reading), funded by the EPSRC (£237K for Salford) (2004-2007). This collaborative project aims to develop a fresh perspective to the research agenda of the UK construction section as a means of ensuring the sustained competitiveness of the sector internationally.

8. Scoping Study: Property and Society, Co-PI with Ghassan Aouad funded by RICS Foundation (5K) (2004). The aim of the report was to provide the basis for the development of the ‘Property and Society’ theme within RICS and subsequently influence government policy and agenda.

9. Additional Management Support for the Salford IMRC, with Ghassan Aouad (PI), funded by the EPSRC (£106K) (2004-2006). The funding aimed to increase the research capacity of the SCRI centre.

10. Academic Fellowship on Operation Management in Healthcare. Funding provided through BuHu (£125K) following a successful application to EPSRC by the University. This funding is leveraged by SCRI. Lead investigator with Ghassan Aouad. The EPSRC budget is managed by Les Ruddock. The project aims to clearly link the aspects of service and construction for delivering better healthcare infrastructures.

11. Immortal Information and Through-life Knowledge Management– Grand Challenge, with Lauri Koskela (PI), Ghassan Aouad, Martin Sexton, Peter McDermott, funded by EPSRC (£167,683 for Salford) (2005-2008).
