Head of Performance Dr Philip Thomas has been successful with his application for a major research grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). The AHRC offers postgraduate and research funding opportunities in knowledge exchange and partnerships, and international research.
Philip Thomas together with Martin Iddon of Leeds were awarded a grand of over £½m for both universities. The bid entitled: 'John Cage and the 'Concert for piano and orchestra' is a major success and will facilitate some important and exciting research, both written and performed.
Philip explains: "John Cage’s Concert for piano and orchestra is a milestone in the history of 20th Century music, its elaborate graphic notation adorning the front covers of a number of studies of modern music. Yet it remains a little understood and underperformed work. This project examines the music and its historical performances in detail and through the creation of an interactive website will allow users – performers, listeners, students and others – to play with the notations and sounds to create infinitely varied versions of the work."
