The Department of Music and Drama at Huddersfield University offers four Music Technology Courses. Each share core areas of music technology such as digital and location recording, production and computer composition. Around this core are built a series of specialist modules allowing students to focus on either electronics, programming and interactive sound design (BA Music Technology), popular music, film music and song writing (BA Music Technology and Popular Music), composition, performance and musicology (BMus Creative Music Technology) or computer animation and video production (BA Music Technology and Digital Media).
There are normally about 50-60 music technology students enrolled in a given year in the Music Department, and about 90-95 in the Engineering Department. This makes for an extremely lively musical environment. Students musical interests range from Death Metal, Punk, Indie, Dance, Electronica, to Acousmatic and Classical music. There are a large number of student bands and ensembles. Students also have the opportunity to record all of the Music Department concerts, producing cds and dvds of the events.
In order to draw together all of the differing courses and resources all staff and students in both the Engineering and Music Departments are a part of the Institute for Music Technology. The purpose of the Institute is to provide a focus for Music Technology in the University, to bid jointly for new facilities and to oversee the portfolio of courses we offer. As more and more of our studio facilities become centred around the Blue Room Studios the Institute is beginning to have more of an obvious physical presence in the University.
Music Technology is one of the largest and fastest growing areas in the University. As you will see from our studio facilities page, we have some of the best facilities in the UK for undergraduate and postgraduate students. With the introduction of the Music Technology and Digital Media course for September 2005 with its collaboration with the Multimedia Department for video production and computer animation Huddersfield is fast positioning itself as one of the leading University providers of Music Technology, Digital Arts, and Popular Music provision
