We are the major user of the campus concert hall, St. Paul's, a beautifully converted Georgian church. Holding over 70 performances a year in this excellent performance space.
The
Recital Hall is a flexible space used primarily for rehearsals and lectures.
Our Tuesday Lunchtime concert and masterclass series also take place here,
and the room is often used as a venue in the Huddersfield Contemporary
Music Festival. There are facilities to record in the room (useful as
a practice aid), and students can book the space when it is not being
used.
The
Music Library is housed within the Department and is home to the University
Library's collection of periodicals, scores, sheet music, books,
and audio-visual recordings. It is an extensive collection, with a particular
strength in 20th-Century music, and is constantly being expanded in response
to requests by staff and students. There are spaces for private study
and a breakout room for group work. The Library also contains a listening
room where students can listen to CDs, records, videos and DVDs. These
can also be taken out on overnight loan. Most standard instrumental and
vocal repertoire is covered, enabling students to try out pieces whilst
preparing a concert or exam programme.

We have 38 practice rooms within the Department. The larger rooms mostly contain grand pianos and are used for instrumental and vocal teaching. They can be used for private practice at other times (including weekends). The fourth floor is also bookable during the week enabling students to plan practice times. On the fifth floor there are smaller rooms with upright pianos, and these can be used when free whilst the building is open. In addition, some of the larger lecture rooms can be used for individual practice or chamber music rehearsals.
There are five group teaching rooms in the Department. These are mostly used for lectures, seminars, and chamber music rehearsals. Students have access to a portable PC/projector setup for seminars where required.
Music Technology is one of the largest and fastest growing areas in the University. As you will see from our studio facilities page, we have some of the best facilities in the UK for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
