A week of sport, food, debate and treasure hunting were the highlights of the 2011 International Week at the University.
The week started with more than 250 staff and students taking part in an international sports day. Teams of different nationalities competed over rounds of basketball, volleyball, squash and football.
Among the highlights of the week was the international food festival which attracted over 1,000 people to the event. The festival originally scheduled for three hours was all over within 46 minutes due to the overwhelming popularity of the event. Students exhibited a diverse range of cuisines from around the world including Polish, Chinese, Bangladeshi, Nordic, Spanish and British. The cooking contest was eventually won by the Vietnamese table with Latvia and Nigeria voted second and third by attendees.
Over 60 students went to on a mystery treasure hunt in Whitby, North Yorkshire. Once again the event was so popular the University had to book two coaches to take students for a very ‘British’ day out. The treasure hunt involved a number of questions about the seaside town and was eventually won by two Czech Republic students who answered the most questions correctly.
Staff and students were invited to an international debate hosted by Christina Yan Zhang (NUS International Students’ Officer in the UK). Christine encouraged students and staff to discuss the importance of firstly UK students going abroad for some of their university education and secondly, the importance to the UK of international students studying over here.
