Pre-arrival information

We have produced a checklist of what you need to do before leaving your home country:

  1. Apply for your visa to study at Huddersfield as soon as you receive your CAS.
  2. Book your accommodation as soon as possible to ensure you have some where to stay whilst studying.
  3. Arrange flights to the UK (the closest airport to Huddersfield is Manchester International Airport).
  4. Book a meet and greet service for when you arrive in the UK.
  5. Make sure you are up to date with any vaccinations required for travelling to the UK and have all the necessary medical certificates.
  6. Arrange currency (mixture of pound sterling cash and travellers’ cheques; around £300 to cover the first few weeks).
  7. Arrange insurance (health, contents and travel).

We have also produced a checklist on what to bring with you:

  • Passport

  • Accommodation details (booking confirmation, Huddersfield address)
  • Statement of financial support, if you are a sponsored student

Check with your airline for your luggage weight allowance. Remember that you can buy warm clothing and other goods once you have arrived in Huddersfield.

Advice for under-18s

If you an international student who is aged 16 or 17 at the time of enrolment, your parents or guardian will have been asked to confirm to the University that you can live and travel independently.  They will also have nominated an adult in the UK who has agreed to take responsibility for you until you reach the age of 18.  We strongly advise that if you are travelling to the UK on your own, you bring with you a letter from your parents or guardian confirming that they are aware of UK regulations relating to under-18s, that have given consent to your studying independently at the University of Huddersfield, and that appropriate care arrangements have been put in place.  For further information please see the UKBA webpages

When should I arrive?

You should arrive in time for the Welcome Programme. We would recommend that you arrive 3-5 days in advance, so that you have enough time to settle in.

Where should I go when I first arrive?

When you arrive in Huddersfield you should go directly to your accommodation, which you must have booked in advance.
