ECDL - Information for registered candidates

A number of events are arranged for candidates who have registered on the programme. In addition to the test sessions we are providing a series of lunchtime seminars, each seminar is devoted to a single module. The series will be repeated at regular intervals. An e-mail list has been set up so candidates can communicate easily with each other to ask questions or make suggestions as well as enabling the centre to pass information to candidates. To send a message to the list, address your message to ECDL Candidates.

A module has been set up in Blackboard (opens in a new window) to help you with your ECDL studies. As a registered ECDL Candidate you are registered to use the ECDL Syllabus 5 module in Blackboard. In this module you can find workbooks and practise files and join in discussions about the modules and ECDL generally. If you have problems logging in you should contact the Staff IT Help Desk, extn 3737.

ECDL Tests

Testing for the ECDL is carried out in the I.T. Training room on level 7 of the Central Services Building. Attendance is required at least 15 minutes before the start of a test session. Any member of staff registered on our ECDL programme may book a test session using the ECDL Test Request booking form. Registration on the University ECDL programme entitles candidates free entry to 14 test sessions which allows an average of two attempts per module. In the unlikely event of a candidate requiring further test sessions a charge of £10 per additional session will be made.

All tests must be booked at least 10 working days in advance. At least 10 days notice of cancellation or changes must be given. In the event of late cancellation or non-attendance the allocation of free test sessions for the candidate will be reduced accordingly.

Test Sessions

Instructions to candidates are included in the ECDL Registration Pack and with test booking confirmations. Each test session is scheduled for 45 minutes and two consecutive test sessions will be available at approximately weekly intervals. A maximum of 8 candidates will be allowed to book on any test session and candidates will be expected to report to the testing room at least 15 minutes before the start of a test.

It is important to inform the invigilator, at the time of the examination, of any problems with the examination conditions. Candidates should note that there is an Examination Appeals Procedure which can be invoked by a candidate unhappy with any other aspect of the assessment and award process.

Lunchtime Seminars

As an ECDL candidate you are invited to the lunch time seminars that we shall be hosting throughout the ECDL programme. Each seminar will be focusing on a single module and will follow a similar format. After the introductions there will be a presentation of the syllabus in detail, sample questions, general guidance and how to get help. This will be followed by a general discussion, question and answer session. At the seminars you will also get to know others who are currently working on the same module as you.

Each seminar will take place in the SDG Training room (opposite the I.T. Training room) on level 7 of the Central Services Building from 12:30 to 13:30. Although formal booking is not required, it would help us to know approximate numbers. If you are planning to attend one of these sessions please let Ruth Pearson (2955) or Liz Cussans (2955) know. These seminars will be repeated on a regular basis so you may not wish to attend for all the modules this time, just come along for the modules you are currently working on.
