ECDL - The European Computer Driving Licence

What is the ECDL?

The ECDL is an internationally recognised standard of competence in IT certifying that the holder has the knowledge and skill needed to use the most common computer applications efficiently and productively.
The aim of the ECDL programme is to ensure consistent levels of IT ability throughout the University, to reduce reliance on IT support and to improve the productivity of staff using PCs.

Who is it for?

The ECDL is for any member of staff who uses computers regularly and who wishes to gain recognition for their IT skills. Other staff not currently using computers regularly can follow the syllabus to enhance their career opportunities.

What does the ECDL cover?

The ECDL is made up of seven modules;

  • IT Security for Users
  • Using the computer and managing files
  • Word Processing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Database
  • Presentation
  • Using the Internet and Email

How do I register for the ECDL?

To express your interest in the ECDL staff programme at the University, please contact Ruth Pearson (2955), Liz Cussans (2955) or i.t.training@hud.ac.uk, Computing & Library Services, for a prospectus pack which contains further details about the programme and an application form.

ECDL Tests

Testing for the ECDL is carried out in the I.T. Training room on level 7 of the Central Services Building. Each test lasts 45 minutes and attendance is required at least 15 minutes before the start of a test session.
Most of the syllabus is covered in our courses and we can recommend materials for filling in the gaps.

Registered candidates

On receipt of a completed agreement form candidates are registered on the ECDL programme and invited to attend an induction session. The names of registered candidates are added to the ECDL Candidates mailing list which is one of the mechanisms used to inform candidates of ECDL events. We also use Blackboard to support and assist candidates studying for the ECDL.
