Sustainability applies to many areas of our operation in Estates and Facilities. The Estates’ Team work to incorporate sustainability considerations into the daily activities of Estates and Facilities, and the University where appropriate.

Did you know?

• We have the second lowest carbon emissions per head out of all UK Universities.
• Our Catering Services has been operating on Fairtrade principles since 2003. We only purchase free range eggs and sell a range of organic and ethical products.
• Our water conservation record is excellent – all but 2 of our 20 buildings use less water than the best practise benchmark figure.
• At our model recycling facility at University Campus Barnsley we recycled 69% of our waste last year. Our recycling rate for all our sites combined has increased from 8% to 44% in the last year.
• Our air cooling systems run using canal water, a renewable resource, for over a third of our buildings.
