Graduated with a BA (Hons) Applied Social Studies/CQSW from Bradford University in 1974 and worked as a Social Worker in Bradford Social Services until 1976 before completing the MA Social Service Planning at Essex University in 1977.
Joined the, then, Polytechnic of Huddersfield in 1977 as a Lecturer in Social Work teaching primarily on the Non-Graduate Diploma in Social Work/CQSW and also teaching social policy on the BSc (Hons) Behavioural Sciences, the Certificate in Health Visiting and the Diploma in District Nursing.
Became Professor in Child Care Studies at Keele University in 1993 before returning to the University of Huddersfield in 1994 to become Professor in Child Care and Director of the Centre of Applied Childhood Studies. Took up the Foundation NSPCC Chair in Applied Childhood Studies in 2006.
Over the years I have taught on a variety of courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate, qualifying and post-qualifying levels in social work, health and the behavioural sciences. More specifically these have been related to: general social policy; the political contexts of social work and social care; social theory and social work; risk and social welfare; and child welfare and child protection. I am currently module leader for:
HMS 1004 Safeguarding Children: Policy and Organisational Contexts
I also teach on HFS 1000 Social Policy and assess all Dissertations for HMS 1000 MA Child Welfare and Safeguarding
I am currently supervising four PhD students and have supervised 13 previous successful PhDs and 2 MPhil completions at the University of Huddersfield, and one PhD at the University of British Columbia, Canada. I have acted as External Examiner for 23 PhDs in the UK, Australia, Canada and Ireland.
I have been a member of numerous research advisory groups including currently the Global Partnership for Transformative Social Work based at the University of Vermont, USA.
I chair of the Editorial Board of Children and Society (Blackwell in association with the National Childrens Bureau) and on the Editorial Board of eleven other national and international journals in the fields of child welfare and social work.
