Biography

Niall came to the university in 1996 from the West Yorkshire College of Health Studies, where he had been a Nurse Tutor. Originally trained in Scotland as a Registered Nurse for people with learning disabilities. he worked in various learning disability care settings including a large institution, community group homes, challenging behaviour units and as a community charge nurse. Niall also worked as a Research Associate on a one-year Yorkshire Region funded project examining the health needs of people with learning disabilities.

After 12 years in nurse education where he had various roles, including course leader and divisional head for learning disabilities nursing, Niall moved to a post in the Division of Community, Public Health and Well-being and taught sociology and psychology to HEFCE students. After this addition to his portfolio, Niall returned to nursing as the Joint Divisional Head for Learning Disability and Child Nursing.

  • FHEA, MSc Applied Behavioural Sciences,
    BSc Nursing with Education,Dip HE Nursing, RNMH.

Responsibilities

Niall currently has two main roles

  1. Joint Head of Undergraduate Nursing - Dept of Health Sciences
    • Leading the development and implementation of the new undergraduate nursing curriculum.
  2. Senior Lecturer Learning Disability Nursing - Division of Mental Health and Learning Disabilities

Research

Niall’s current research and scholarship centers around two longstanding academic interests: The Sociology of Intellectual Disability Care; The Social Construction of Theoretical and Practical Professional Knowledge. Niall is a member of the Health and Social Care Research Centre and the Centre for Research in Social Sciences.

  • Current - Lead of Cross University and Regional ePortfolio Network (ALPS CETL follow-on project)
  • 2010-2012 - Project Leader looking at ePortfolio recommendation for University of Huddersfield to enable ePDP and eReflection
  • 2009-2010 – Project Team of the ePortfolio evaluation project (ALPS)
  • 2008-present – PhD study examining the social construction of professional knowledge in health and social care students through ePortfolios
  • 2006-2009 – member of the University core team for the ALPS project – representing the institution on the ALPS E-valuation Committee, ALPS Competencies development.
  • 2003-2006 Member of South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust Professional Leadership Group
