Biography

Tracey joined the department in March 2007. She completed her PhD at the University of Warwick in 2002, which explored the formation and establishment of female to male transsexual identities. As well as holding research interests and publishing in this area, Tracey has also researched and written on the topic of learning and identity (re)production in the workplace and, from this work, has developed a particular interest in the sociology of service work. Prior to her appointment here in the department, she was a Research Fellow at Cardiff University working on an ESRC funded four year social research project concerned with learning at work. Other funded research projects Tracey has worked on include a large DFES funded project, concerning the working lives of school teachers, at the University of Nottingham and a NHS funded project, at the University of Leicester, carrying out a systematic literature review on treatments for personality disorders. Tracey also has many years of teaching experience and has taught undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Warwick, University of Leicester and the University of Huddersfield. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Research Projects:

Work and Identity in the 'Upmarket' Hair Salon

Hairdressing is a highly feminised occupation with a general reputation of being a low end, low skilled job rather than an occupation with any ‘professional’ status. This research critically examines this perception by investigating the interrelationship between work and identity in contemporary ‘upmarket’ hairdressing salons in the UK. It explores, in particular, the nature and types of ‘emotional labour’ and ‘emotion work’ carried out by stylists in ‘up-market’ salon settings and how these impact upon stylist-client relationships and stylists’ sense of self. In this context, the research considers the interconnections between work places and cultures, work practices, occupational norms and skills. The research employs qualitative methods, including interviews and observations across four ‘upmarket’ and ‘high fashion’ UK hairdressing organisations. Interviews with clients from various salon types are also employed in order to inform the research. The research contributes to academic debates concerning emotional labour, service work identities and the concept of ‘skills’ in service work contexts.
