Biography

Surya Monro gained her PhD from the University of Sheffield in 2000. Before joining the University of Huddersfield in June 2009, Dr Monro conducted interdisciplinary research in the fields of sexuality and gender, citizenship, and local and national governance. Dr Monro has worked as a researcher at the following Universities: Cambridge, Sheffield, Leeds, Keele, and Leeds Metropolitan. She was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Newcastle (2007-2010) and a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cape Town (February to March 2008). 

Dr Monro has published extensively in the fields of gender and sexuality, notably on the topics of gender diversity, lesbian, gay and bisexual equalities and local governance, and citizenship and democracy.

Responsibilities

Dr Monro contributes to, and supports, the development of the research portfolio of the Centre for Research in the Social Sciences. She was a co-applicant on a large ESRC project about LGBT Equality in Local Government and has recently finished work on a project about Community Cohesion and Prevent, funded by Local Government Yorkshire and Humber, on which she was the Principal Applicant.

Dr Monro teaches at undergraduate and postgraduate level in areas including social theory and gender and sexuality.

Professional Activities

  • Current member of the British Sociological Association.
  • On the Advisory panel for the LIVEDIFFERENCE EU funded research programme based at the University of Leeds (PI Professor Gill Valentine).
  • Regularly reviews papers, books and book proposals for a range of publishers and journals
  • Provides media interviews (local and national radio) on issues relating to gender and sexuality

Teaching

Dr Monro is currently Module Leader for the 'Social Theory in Contemporary Society' second level undergraduate module, and also supervises MA and doctoral students.

Consultancy

Dr Monro has provided consultancy including:

  • Organising and conducting focus groups in Bradford for the Ethics and Integrity project which is funded by the ESRC and the British Academy (July 2010).
  • A report on homophobia and discrimination in England and Wales for European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights and the Danish Institute of Human Rights (March 2008).

Research

Dr Monro’s research interests concern equalities and diversity, focusing on gender and sexuality and the intersections of these with other equalities areas, including ‘race’, faith, and nationality. These interests are pursued via an examination of equalities initiatives and organisational processes at local, national and international levels. Work is currently in progress on a new monograph titled ‘Bisexual Identities’, to be published by Palgrave MacMillan.
