Multiple Personalities and (self) Identity in a Changing Landscape

This research explores sociologically the concepts of (multiple) self, (multiple) identity and autobiography. In particular it focuses on the production and representation of online or virtual selves and the relationship between such selves and the ‘external world’.  The Internet has enabled the creation of virtual worlds populated by virtual and multiple selves through a variety of online communities ranging from social networking sites such as facebook to online support groups aimed at those who identify with/as having a range of experiences or conditions. Amongst the many online support sites are those aimed at people who identify themselves as living with multiple personalities (sometimes referred to Multiple Personality Syndrome [MPS] or Dissociative Identity Disorder [DID]). This research will investigate these sites and the people / personalities who inhabit them.
