Impact

Our research staff develop robust engagement strategies aimed at maximising the impact of each research project. These include consulting with stakeholders and potential research users, publicising the research across user networks, and providing workshops and seminars to disseminate research findings. In some cases we also work in close collaboration with user organisations throughout the course of the project.  Examples of research impact include:

  • Dr Santokh Gill’s innovative project about young British Muslim Pakistani men in Bradford has resulted in production of a short film as part of a community development programme
  • Dr Gráinne McMahon’s research has informed Home Office and Youth Justice Board policy on education, training, and employment programmes for young and adult offenders
  • Dr Andy Mycock’s research in citizenship education led him to serve on the Ministry of Justice Youth Citizenship Commission
  • Dr Catherine McGlynn and Dr Andy Mycock have used their research on the political role of history and citizenship lessons to promote work with young people, through the UK Youth Parliament
  • Professor Jeff Hearn was keynote speaker at an international conference on EU policies on Violence against Women, Children and Youth in Slovenia, as part of an EU programme on implementing good practice and recommendations in this field
  • Dr Surya Monro’s research (with Paul Thomas, Andy Mycock and Umar Razaq) about community cohesion in Bradford and Kirklees was conducted in close collaboration with Local Government Yorkshire and Humber and the findings influenced policy development across Yorkshire and Humber. See the project page.
  • Dr Pete Woodcock served on a working group producing a report on the use of informal educational means to teach human rights
  • Dr Sharon Wray has contributed to work by the British Heart Foundation on CHD in African and Caribbean Origin Populations
