The Centre provides a friendly and supportive environment for research staff. In addition to designated administrative support, research staff have access to the University-wide Research Office and to excellent library and electronic resources. The Centre strongly encourages the use of original research findings in teaching, and encourages stimulating and productive crossovers between teaching and research.
We are committed to staff development, including encouraging our staff members and students to present at a wide range of national and international conferences. These have included the British Sociological Association Annual Conference; the Political Studies Association Annual Conference; the Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism 18th Annual Conference (London School of Economics); the Pacific Sociological Association conference (Seattle), the Children's Identity and Citizenship in Europe 10th Annual Conference (University of Istanbul, Turkey); the International Society for Political Psychology (San Francisco); the International Federation on Ageing (Melbourne, Australia); and the Global Studies Association Conference (Busan, South Korea).
We hold an annual series of seminars.
We encourage PhD applications - both full and part-time – in our areas of interest. There is a lively postgraduate community associated with the Centre for Research in the Social Sciences and with the other research centres in the School of Human and Health Sciences. We provide PhD students with offices and there is designated meeting space for all postgraduates. Our postgraduates organise a regular Forum with invited speakers. They also have the opportunity to present their work at our annual Research Festival and at other Huddersfield research events. We aim to provide PhD students with experience of teaching as part of their professional development.
Current and completed PhD studentships in the Centre reflect the major themes of gender, sexuality, life course, citizenship, and identity.
