The rapidly changing needs and expectations of healthcare environments can be complex and demanding. In order to interpret and manage services effectively, a fully trained workforce is paramount.
The course provides you with the opportunity to relate your studies to your own clinical practice. This will involve exploring and reflecting upon a range of ideas within healthcare practice, helping you to develop the knowledge required to provide complex care.

• You must possess a Nursing Studies Diploma of Higher Education or an equivalent qualification and current NMC registration.
• You must have 12 months post-registration experience before studying Supporting Learning in Practice (NMC 2008), require access to a student nurse in clinical practice and must meet the NMC requirements for recognition.
• You are required to submit a 250 word personal statement as part of your application.
• If you have successfully completed Supporting Learning in Practice, you may be eligible to gain accreditation for your prior learning] towards this course.Please note: UCAS points are based on the new UCAS tariff, introduced for courses starting in 2017/18.
Year 1: Core modules
Developing an Understanding of Research Processes and Methods (Distance Learning)
This distance learning module provides you with the opportunity to evaluate and critically appraise published healthcare research, as well as develop an understanding of different designs, methods and approaches to research. Emphasis will be placed on utilising a structured systematic process of reviewing research that provides the necessary evidence to support and develop clinical practice. You will evaluate and have the opportunity to develop a critical understanding of published research within the context of ethical, national and local healthcare provision. Assessment will be through a piece of coursework where you will produce a learning log.
Supporting Learning in Practice (Distance Learning)
In this module you will gain a deeper understanding of the role of a mentor. You will develop knowledge of the ways in which learning takes place, and study elements of supporting learning in practice including supporting and assessing students and accurate grading of practice. All module materials will be available online and support from the module team is offered to facilitate a distance approach to learning. You will demonstrate/reflect on your skills in mentoring learners using a learning contract and will be assessed through coursework in the form of an E-portfolio.
Supporting Learning in Practice
In this module you will have the opportunity to gain the skills required to meet your professional body‘s standards or guidelines to become a mentor in your place of work. This includes studying the theories, debates and skills associated with being a mentor. You will explore the nature of learning and the assessment of learning and apply this to the concept of a learning environment. You will be required to attend classroom sessions and tutorials and will also be supported by the University’s virtual learning environment. You will be assessed in practice by mentoring a learner under the supervision of an already qualified mentor. You will also be required to complete coursework.
Year 2: Core modules
Project for Healthcare Professionals
You will have the opportunity to write a piece of work that is directly related to your work area. During the study blocks you will engage with the issues of research methods in order to develop a piece of work that will have direct impact on your professional practice. You will be assessed on that one piece of work which will be an audit report, a literature review or a research proposal.
Working in New Roles and Contexts
This module provides the opportunity for you to relate your studies to your own clinical practice. You will identify and examine a relevant improvement issue that requires personal role development. You will also identify challenges in the proposed improvement in practice through a written coursework.

We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let students know in good time the options available for them to choose for the following year.
We will only change core modules for a course if it is necessary for us to do so, for example to maintain course accreditation. We will let you know about any such changes as soon as possible, usually before you begin the relevant academic year.

Teaching and assessment
Teaching on this course is delivered through lectures, group work, seminars, tutorials, online learning logs and distance learning. A variety of assessment methods will be utilised including negotiated learning contracts, reports, essays, research critiques and a project.
Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks, unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results. Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.
