Entry requirements

Entrants to this RIBA part 3 award must first gain (or obtain exemption from) the RIBA part 1 and part 2 examinations in Architecture and must complete a period of 24 months professional training (recorded with the RIBA PEDR) before they sit the final examination.

What can I research?

Course content

The course comprises a single module: Professional Practice and Management in Architecture, which focuses on application of the skills and knowledge required for the professional practice of architecture in today's society.

Whilst working in architectural practice, you will prepare a detailed Case Study of a project in which you have been involved and you will prepare a Personal Evaluation Report of your professional experience. The module includes a short course of full-time study at the University, during which lectures, tutorials and workshops will address the obligations and responsibilities of professional practice as an Architect in the UK.

The course concludes with an ‘Office-based Assignment' in which you will be expected to demonstrate your competence, professional awareness, knowledge and ability in the contexts of the management architectural practice, the procurement of buildings and the supervision of building construction, and the legislation relating to Planning procedures and the construction of buildings in the UK, followed by a ‘viva voce' examination conducted by a panel of professional architectural practitioners (referred-to as the ‘Professional Interview').

Successful completion of the course leads to Registration as an Architect and Chartered Membership of the RIBA.

Professional Practice and Management in Architecture

The application of skill and knowledge at a professional level in the practice of Architecture in today's society and the intention is that this will form the central focus of this module. A detailed case study of a live project together with a personal evaluation of professional experience will also form the essential components of the module.

The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, practical workshops.

You will have the opportunity to reflect upon your own career development and report on an architectural project with which you have been involved.

Assessment is based upon:

•  completion of an RIBA Professional Experience and Development Record (PEDR);

•  submission of a Case Study, a Personal Evaluation Report and a Professional CV;

•  a scenario-based Assignment covering the subjects of Architectural Practice, Management and Law, undertaken in open-book conditions in your workplace;

•  a ‘viva voce' Professional Interview.

Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results. Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

This course is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and Prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) to provide exemption from Part 3 of the Examination in Architecture.

How much will it cost me?

Tuition fees for postgraduate study in 2018/19 have not yet been set by the University. This is expected to be confirmed in May 2017 and we will update our website as soon as this information becomes available.

## Materials You will need to supply your own books and materials for personal study and provide printed copies of the documents required for assessment. The cost of these items in recent years has been in the order of £300 - £600. These costs will vary and indicative costs are given as a guide only. There will also be costs associated with travelling to the University for lectures, tutorials, workshops and examinations conducted at the University. These costs will vary contingent upon the distance travelled and any arrangements necessary for overnight accommodation.
