About the course

This short course will assist you in developing:

• The analytical and problem solving skills required for undertaking advanced clinical assessments of patients with a range of clinical conditions as negotiated on an individual basis.

• Your clinical examination and clinical decision making skills.

• The skills required to take a patient's history.

A case study approach affords an opportunity for you to assess complex health and social care needs. The opportunity to learn selected clinical examination skills makes this short course appropriate for a range of healthcare practitioners, in particular those supporting people with undifferentiated diagnoses and long term conditions, whose role and responsibilities call for competence in advanced clinical assessment and decision making.

This course complements the [Independent and Supplementary Prescribing|00007064] course and [Managing Minor Illness|00007614] short course in order to assist in the development of extended skills

Entry requirements

You must:

• Be registered with the NMC, HCPC or an appropriate professional board and work in an area where they are seeing patients with clinical presentations.

• Be working in a setting with patients who may present with clinical problems.

• Organise support and supervision from a Clinical Educator ideally a GP, Consultant or Advanced Nurse Practitioner for 102 hours during this course.

Placements

Teaching and assessment

You will be taught through a series of lectures, seminars and skills laboratory demonstrations.Your studies will be supported by the University's virtual learning environment.

Assessment will include a written assignment.

Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results.Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.
