The course provides the opportunity for those who have studied an undergraduate degree in a health related subject, to undertake a two year full-time Master's course and upon successful completion receive eligibility for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) within one of the four fields of Nursing: adult, child, learning disability and mental health.
This course helps you to communicate effectively and develop your critical and analytical skills, preparing you to become a competent, caring, compassionate, courageous and committed registered nurse.
The intensive two year course comprises of 50% theory and 50% practice, where you will undertake placements in primary and secondary care settings. The course consists of three stages, each comprising of two or three compulsory modules. Throughout the duration of the course you will undertake five theory modules and three theory/practice modules, which are shared with students from the other fields of nursing. Your practice learning will be field specific, predominantly relating to nursing adults aged 18 years and above, with a wide range of physical, psychological and social needs.

You must have:
• An Honours degree (2:1) or a qualification of an equivalent standard, in a discipline appropriate to that of the proposed programme to be followed. On occasions we may accept a Honours degree (2:2) with substantial relevant experience.
• Maths and English GCSE at Grade C or above (no equivalents are accepted).
• Evidence of completing 550 hours of theory and 325 hours of practice in a healthcare setting, which is a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirement, in order to demonstrate that you can achieve all the required hours due to the intensive nature of the course. If you are successfully shortlisted on the course you will be required to complete the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) NMC template.
• For applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum of IELTS 7.0 overall with no element lower than 7.0, will be considered acceptable, or equivalent.
• If you hold any other qualifications which are not listed, please contact us before applying for this course.
• Offers will be subject to an interview, an Occupational Health assessment and references. Please note all the information provided in support of your application may be checked and must be verifiable as a true record.
• You also need satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), occupational health clearances and APL (NMC) evidence prior to registration on the course. We arrange these as part of the application process. You will be required to sign a self-declaration at the start of each year and at the end of the course. All police contact during the course must be reported to the course leader as a matter of urgency and may lead to suspension or termination.
Please note: there are a limited number of places on the course and the demand is generally high, therefore we may not interview all applicants who meet the required entry criteria due to this competitive process.Please note: UCAS points are based on the new UCAS tariff, introduced for courses starting in 2017/18.
Stage 1 core modules
Foundations of Nursing
This module introduces you to the foundations of nursing. You will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the purpose and function of the professional body for nursing, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and consider the current legal, ethical and moral frameworks which underpin nursing. You will also explore the psychological and sociological influences which impact on care and critically consider the ways in which safe, effective person centred care can be delivered through effective partnership working. Assessment will involve two pieces of coursework, where you will deliver an oral presentation based on a patient/client from practice and produce a written case study.
Nursing Practice 1
This module is composed of practice and theory elements. For the theoretical element you will have the opportunity to develop your professional knowledge and skills relevant to your specific field of nursing. Assessment involves undertaking an anatomy, physiology and applied pathophysiology exam. Within the practice element you will have the opportunity to undertake placements and apply what you have learnt in theory to your experiential learning. You will be assessed through a Practice Assessment Document (PAD) and Ongoing Achievement and Record of Skills Log (OARSL). The module will be linked to the relevant skills clusters (NMC, 2010).
Stage 2 core modules
Effective Communication and Care Delivery (Adult)
This module helps you to develop knowledge and skills in relation to communicating and caring for people within the field of adult nursing. You will have the opportunity to specifically develop the nursing qualities and skills associated with NHS strategies to deliver care in a caring, compassionate, competent, committed, communicative and courageous manner (6 C’s; Department of Health, 2012). You will also consider specific communication models along with the evidence-base to promote person centred, culturally sensitive approaches to care that are respectful and dignified. Assessment will involve undertaking a professional simulated exam and a piece of coursework, where you will reflect on the simulated exam.
Nursing Practice 2
This module is composed of practice and theory elements. For the theoretical element you will have the opportunity to develop your professional knowledge and skills relevant to your specific field of nursing. Within the practice element you will have the opportunity to apply what you have learnt in theory through experiential learning within a placement and you will be assessed through a Practice Assessment Document (PAD) and Ongoing Achievement and Record of Skills Log (OARSL). The module will be linked to the relevant skills clusters (NMC, 2010).
This module provides the opportunity for you to develop the knowledge and skills required to design an ethical and feasible research project, specific to your field of nursing. You will explore the differences between qualitative and quantitative research methods and methodologies, and have the chance to develop your skills of critical appraisal through an appraisal of published nursing literature specific to your field of nursing. You will also consider the differences between research, audit, local service evaluation and the ethical and governance approvals required if studies are to be carried out in the NHS or other public sector organisations. Assessment will involve producing one piece of coursework, in the form of a research proposal.
Stage 3 core modules
Nursing Leadership and Management
Effective leadership and management skills are essential attributes of a registered nurse. This module helps you to develop your leadership and management skills through the exploration of a range of subjects which you can apply to your specific field of nursing. You will examine various organisational problems, through which you can develop your skills in problem solving and change management. In addition, you will also consider the current legal and political context of healthcare and the impact on your professional role. You will be assessed through two pieces of coursework specific to your field of nursing, involving a poster presentation which presents an organisational problem from a practice setting and a report based on your proposal to improve the problem through change management.
Nursing Practice 3
This module is composed of practice and theory elements. For the theoretical element you will have the opportunity to further develop your professional knowledge and skills relevant to your specific field of nursing in preparation for your future role as a Registered Nurse. Within the practice element you will have the opportunity to apply what you have learnt in theory to your experiential learning within a placement and you will be assessed through a Practice Assessment Document (PAD) and Ongoing Achievement and Record of Skills Log (OARSL). The module will be linked to the relevant skills clusters (NMC, 2010).
Research and Innovation in Nursing Practice
In this module you will undertake a research based project where you will develop in detail, a topic of interest related to your field of nursing. Building on previous evidence-based enquiries you will be supported to implement your project proposal whilst engaging in critical reflection throughout. This will lead to the generation of original knowledge centring around contemporary nursing practice. You will be assessed through two pieces of coursework; firstly an oral presentation, where you will critically defend your project methodology. You will then produce a dissertation, where you will demonstrate the detailed application and reported findings of your project.

Nothing can really replicate working in the real world, that's why the course comprises of 50% practice, which is essential in your development. During the course you will undertake a number of practice learning experiences in a range of healthcare environments, these may include NHS Trusts, charities, hospices, schools and community settings. You will undertake 622.5 hours in stage 1, 647.5 hours in stage 2 and 722.5 hours in stage 3.
Throughout the practical experiences you will be mentored by a qualified nurse or other suitably qualified professional who will provide expert help and advice if required.
To allow you the broadest professional experience possible, practice experiences are generally offered across West Yorkshire and beyond, covering 24 hour care including evening, weekend and occasional night shifts.
You will be assessed in a variety of ways including written coursework, practice, professional simulated exams, case presentations, competency based assessments and examinations, through which you will demonstrate your in-depth knowledge and understanding.
Upon successful graduation you could work within the National Health Service, the private or voluntary sectors or you could specialise in an area of acute care requiring intensive support, as well as community care. Alternatively you may choose to practice abroad or undertake further extensive professional development opportunities. Possible career opportunities may include training as a district nurse, advanced nurse practitioner or specialist in acute care, as well as undertaking management roles, where you may develop and implement policy. There are also many nurse specialist roles including diabetes specialist nurse, respiratory specialists, continence specialists, palliative care specialists and community matrons specialising in managing long term conditions.

Whilst studying this course you are currently not required to register as a member with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), however you must follow their codes of conduct.
Teaching and assessment
You will be taught by a team who really understand what it is like be an adult nurse and are able to demonstrate the latest techniques and procedures, whilst supporting you as you put these skills and qualities into practice.
A range of teaching and learning strategies are used to suit different learning styles. Our virtual learning environment and state-of-the-art simulation equipment aims to provide you with everything you need to be successful in theory and practice.
Throughout the course there are various opportunities for you to engage with interprofessional learning and multidisciplinary working. You will have the opportunity to attend research conferences, which involve other health professional students. You will also be taught through seminars, group work, practical experience, simulation, role play, computer based learning and lectures.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results. Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

How much will it cost me?
Tuition fees for our health professional courses are currently paid for by the NHS, and in most cases a bursary will be available. To qualify for funding, you must be studying a course which leads to a professional registration, be that full-time or part-time. You must also meet the eligibility criteria and residency rules. This degree course is not available to international students from outside of the UK or EU.
