About the course

As people are the most important resource in an organisation, it's essential to recruit, retain and motivate the best staff for a business to be successful. On the integrated Masters Human Resource Management (MHRM) course you will have the opportunity to develop a sound knowledge and understanding of HR practices. The course is designed in such a way as to help develop you as potential Human Resource Management (HRM) professionals and give you the opportunity to integrate academic knowledge and practice and continually learn from experiences to add value in organisations. In addition the course develops a range of HR skills, behaviours and competence and supports students to develop professional behaviours and business acumen. The course is an integrated Masters allowing you to progress seamlessly from your undergraduate degree to Master's level in just four years. The curriculum allows you the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge at Masters level to meet the requirements of a professional level of membership with the CIPD. Successful completion of the final Masters year will entitle you to register with the institute to use the designatory letters Assoc CIPD, which signifies your professional membership of the institute. The CIPD is the professional body for HR and people development and the University of Huddersfield is an APPROVED CIPD centre.

Entry requirements for this course are normally one of the following:

•  ABB at A level

•  DDM in BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma

•  128 UCAS tariff points from a combination of Level 3 qualifications

•  Access to Higher Education Diploma with 45 Level 3 credits at Merit or above

•  International Baccalaureate with an overall score of 31 points.

Course content

You'll gain a human resource education with the opportunity to learn about the role of organisations. This degree has been developed in close association with employers and professional bodies, ensuring its relevance for today's jobs market.

Year 1

Behavioural Approaches to Work and Society

This module analyses the sociological, psychological and cultural influences on people in organisations and the ways in which these factors affect how organisations function and operate. You’ll explore the role of the manager and the theories and frameworks that support managers.


Managing Human Resources and Personal Development

This module provides an introduction to aspects of managing and developing people in organisations. The module explores the varied roles of people management specialists and line managers in areas such as people resourcing, employment relations, and equality and diversity. An integral element of the module is a programme of activities to enables students to identify, analyse and develop a range of skills for success in academic study in addition to the development of a broad range of employability related skills.


Professional Aspects of Business

This module introduces you to key areas in both legal and financial aspects of business. You’ll look at how financial information is prepared, presented and interpreted by internal and external users and consider aspects of employment and contract law relevant to non-specialists. As well as delivering theory and technical information, practical application is presented through worked examples, group working and discussions.


Introduction to Business Management

This module provides an introduction to Business Management and the essential knowledge and skills required to be a successful manager. It will focus on a range of key business management topics so you can learn about the integrated nature of business. It will allow you to understand the behaviour of markets and consider issues relevant to operating in a global business environment.

Year 2

Leading and Managing Change

The aim of this module is to develop a strong understanding of change processes on personal, organizational, and societal levels so as to enable students to gain knowledge of various theories and models associated with leading and managing change.


Human Resource Skills for Personal Development and Employability

This module will help you to develop and articulate skills for employability to support your application and entry to work in the HR sector. In this module you will start your career planning and developing employability and HR skills to prepare you for placement and/or employment in the HR sector. The seminars throughout the module are interactive, using tools developed by the University Careers Service as well as practical insight into the world of work and working lives.


Management Research Methods and Decision Making

This module introduces you to the theory and practice of research methods and decision making theory to learn and identify the different techniques needed to conduct high quality research and then apply that research to how decisions are made in business.


Real World Business Issues

This module engages with live business issues and important worldly events via a series of invited guest speakers, inviting you to develop your thinking and questioning skills. Following these external inputs you will also have the opportunity to use your analytical, debating and argumentation skills in tutor groups, as well as applying your wider learning and research skills, ending in a group presentation assessing possible courses of action.


Operations Management

This module introduces the key discipline of business operations. Operations relates to the delivery of products and services, through the use of important planning and control techniques. After a general introduction to the concept some of the most important techniques will be covered such as capacity management, inventory management and quality.

Year 3 – optional placement year

The course offers an optional one-year (48 weeks) work placement after the second year, in the UK or abroad. Alternatively, should you not wish to complete a 12 month placement, a minimum of 4 weeks' full-time work experience must be completed after Year 2 and before completion of Year 3.

Management Work and Society

In modern society work is important for economic and social wellbeing, playing a central part in our lives. This core module builds on management theory studied in year one, exploring contemporary issues in the workplace and how to deal with them from a management perspective. Topics on this module include the role of gender in the workplace, professional work, the globalisation of work, the labour process, unemployment and the future of work.


Managing Organisational Design and Change

The module provides an insight and understanding of the concept, theory, tools and techniques associated with organisational design for sustained performance. Organisational design is the process of initial configuration and continual adjustment that enables an organisation to respond to demands and meet challenges encountered in the operating environment.


Driving Organisational Performance through People

This module focuses on how organisations can drive sustained organisation performance by creating a high-performance work organisation exploring both the role of people management and line managers in the performance management process. The module assesses the different conceptual frameworks of high-performance working (HPW) and examines its impact on organisational performance, competitive advantage, employee engagement and employee well-being. Employee Engagement is specifically focused on, linking its application to HR policies, strategies and practices and how to support the building of a high performance culture.


Managing HR in Contemporary Organisations

This module introduces students to the role of the HR Function in organisations, focusing on the aims and objectives of HR departments in contemporary organisations and the ways that these are evolving. The module enables students to identify and review the business and contextual factors affecting organisations and to assess the impacts of these factors on the HR function. Different ways of delivering HR objectives and emerging developments in the management of the employment relationship are explored as well as the methods that can be used to demonstrate that the function adds value for organisations and evidence linking HR activity with positive organisational outcomes. The module also examines HR’s role in strategy formulation and implementation and in facilitating and promoting effective change management. The case for professionalism and an ethical approach to HR is introduced as a key element in the role of HR.

Cross Cultural Studies

This module considers the influence that national culture has on behaviour and the implications of this for organisational design and management. The impact that working across national cultures is considered and how the cross cultural manager can be supported in a changing environment. A blend of theory and practice engages the learner in a range of organisational and cultural settings.


E-Commerce

E-commerce is the buying and selling of goods and services, over an electronic network, primarily the Internet. For many organisations e-commerce has become an essential aspect of their business allowing them to provide value and services that are different from their offline counterparts. In order to understand the e-commerce environment this module will develop your understanding of online business, the importance of developing business and revenue models, the rise of electronic commerce in the knowledge economy and the changing face of marketing to support your business awareness.


Digital And Social Media Marketing

Digital Marketing is a term which encapsulates the targeted, measurable and interactive marketing of products and services through the use of the internet. This module will investigate and explore a variety of digital and social media marketing tools and their implementation within a practical context. In addition this module will help develop your understanding of online consumer behaviour, organisational marketing strategy and online decision making through the use of Web analytics. You will also cover the practical aspects of online brand development and have the opportunity to gain an understanding of integrated marketing campaigns, search engine optimisation (SEO) and social media.


Global Management in Context

This module develops the role of being a 'global manager' within organisations increasingly affected by differing forms of global activity. It encourages global thinking and managing change in the face of an emerging global communication revolution and volatile trading environments. Topics include: developing a worldly orientation, managing international relationships, moving from control to co-operation.


The Psychology of Work & Organisations

This module will introduce you to psychological concepts and then you'll have the opportunity to learn, understand and appraise the application of psychological principles and theories to workplaces and organisations. This module will include a critical overview and discussion of personnel psychology, namely, theories of personality and psychometric testing and assessment centres. Furthermore, the module will help you to develop a critical appreciation of human behaviour in the workplace including the nature of employee behaviour, the extent to which the work environment contributes to the physical and emotional wellbeing of employees, group functioning, motivation and performance. Knowledge acquired from this module will provide a foundation for learners to pursue further study at postgraduate level in organisational behaviour, through enabling them to develop a comprehensive understanding of businesses from a psychological perspective.


Managing in the Knowledge Economy

In the last few decades knowledge has become recognised as a key resource for the successful growth and management of organisations. The growing importance of the knowledge resource to organisational success has led to the need for organisations to create and manage the distribution of this key resource. Knowledge Management and Organisational Learning are concerned with the challenges of generating, disseminating and institutionalising knowledge and learning through organisational systems, strategies and processes. This module will help you to explore the multifaceted nature of knowledge and learning within organisations, including organisational activities that generate knowledge and organisational barriers to knowledge creation and dissemination. This module explores the benefits of learning and knowledge management, in terms of competitiveness and productivity, and the benefits to the individual of adaptability, long-term employability and personal growth.

Final year for Master of Human Resource Management

Developing Skills for Business Leadership

The module provides a wide variety of different opportunities to develop a range of skills and knowledge that have been identified by the CIPD as being important for all HR leaders. You will be provided with different tools and ways to understand yourself better and to influence and work with other people.


Investigating a Business Issue from a HR Perspective

This module equips you to complete a 7,000 word report on a current business issue in your organisation from an HR perspective with recommendations for improvements and costings. Interactive workshops, tutor and peer support, and a dedicated supervisor for 1-1 meetings will support you to complete your work-based investigation for this CIPD approved module.


Resourcing and Talent Management

This module focuses not just on the practical aspects of recruitment, selection, employee retention and dismissal, but also on the strategic aspects to equip learners with the knowledge and skills required for resourcing and talent management within a global context. The module will be assessed by an individual report focussing on the strategic nature of People Resourcing and Talent, in addition to a portfolio of HR related skills.

You will also investigate a range of resourcing practices to prepare a report and make recommendations on how an organisation can best attract, select, manage and retain talented individuals in order to add value.


Learning and Talent Development

The module examines the ways in which learning and talent development contributes to the achievement of economic social and cultural objectives for individuals organisations and governments. It encourages you to develop a critical understanding of the potential and limitations of Learning and Development in work and to reflect critically on theory and practice from an ethical and professional standpoint.

Assessment is an assignment based on evaluating policy and practice in Learning & Development and development of a range of related skills


Managing Employment Relations

This module focuses not just on the practical, theoretical and employment law aspects of the subject area, but also on the strategic issues in order to equip learners with the knowledge and skills required to manage employees and give advice to managers in a constantly changing and evolving environment.


Reward Management

This module develops a theoretical and practical understanding of reward management reflecting the CIPD professional standards.

Key principles of reward management are explored together with the relevant underpinning theories and axioms. The notion of using reward as a driver for enhanced organizational performance is explored and applied via case study and commercial real world examples.


Human Resource Management in a Global Context

This module develops a range of People Management & Development personal, academic, and HR practitioner skills. During the course students are expected to develop a number of specified skills regarding the analysis of business situations and understanding how the HR contextual elements are applied. There is a range of underpinning knowledge that will have been learnt and provided in other modules that will be re-applied in this module.


Developing and Leading People

This module will focus on a wide range of aspects of people management and will explore both effective leadership and management. This will be important to you as both HR practitioners in developing these skills within your organisation but also personally as future leaders and managers.

Placements

Work experience is required as part of the course to meet CIPD's professional standards. You can choose to complete a sandwich placement between year 2 and the final year, spending a full 12 months in industry. Alternatively should you not wish to complete a 12 month placement a minimum of 4 weeks work experience must be completed after year 2 and before completion of year 3. You may complete the 4 week placement as a block or as days across a number of weeks. The course offers an optional one-year placement in Year 3. This paid position provides the opportunity for further personal development and a real-world context during which you'll apply the knowledge and skills obtained on the course.

The Business School was opened in 2010 at a cost of £17m and is the most eco-friendly building on campus. It's a state-of-the art facility and provides you with a modern, professional environment in which to learn and develop. Located right next to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal it's in a leafy and picturesque location at the heart of the campus.

How much will it cost me?

In 2017/18, the tuition fee for UK and EU students at the University of Huddersfield will be £9,250.

Tuition fees will cover the cost of your study at the University as well as charges for registration, tuition, supervision and examinations.
