About the course

This top-up course encompasses subjects such as dealing with the corporate level of hospitality, tourism and leisure, including operations, strategy, organisation and management. You'll become familiar with key issues which impact upon the strategic development of companies within these sectors. You'll also study research methods and undertake an individual project in your chosen area of interest. A key challenge facing the expanding hospitality industry is the requirement for creative, able managers who can deal with the complexities of management.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for this course are normally one of the following:

•  A Foundation degree or equivalent including a Business related subject.

•  120 ECTS or equivalent in a business related subject

•  HCIMA final membership with a minimum of five years supervisory experience.

We welcome applications from Higher Diploma and associate degree holders from outside the UK.

Course content

Core modules:

Research Project

This module helps develop your skills and ability to carry out a substantial investigation into a particular aspect of hospitality management of your choice. In the early stages of project development, seminars and workshops are organised to provide guidance in various important aspects of project formulation and development, such as choice of appropriate methodology, identification of sources of appropriate information, literature review techniques and report writing skills.


Strategic Management for the Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Industries

This module will address principles of strategic management and is applied to industry practice. It covers the four elements of strategic management, namely: Strategic Analysis, Strategic Choice, Strategic Implementation and Evaluation. You’ll have the opportunity to explore issues such as competitive advantage, sustainability, competence-based organisations, dispersion of knowledge, supply chain and value chain, mergers, acquisitions, strategic alliances, hostile takeovers, generic strategies, adaptive strategies, disruptive innovation and the digital age.


Management of Organisations for the Hospitality Industry

This module explores theories and applied concepts in contemporary management thinking for the hospitality industry. You’ll engage with issues such as business ethics, values, vision and mission, corporate social responsibility, leadership, learning and decision-making, managing performance, corporate and occupational identity, organisational and occupational culture, organisational and occupational commitment, innovation and adaptive change processes in the hospitality industry.


Hospitality Operational Analysis

This module aims to help develop your analytical skills when faced with performance management of the hospitality industry. Emphasis will be placed on extending the process of operational management to include operational strategy. The implementation and development of management in a variety of hospitality models and the analytical and conceptual tools available to improve and increase revenues, performance and productivity will be a key aspect.


International HRM for the Hospitality Industry

The aim of this module is to provide you with a good knowledge and understanding of theory and practice in relation to International Human Resource Management, with a focus on the Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure and Events industry. The subjects you’ll study include the impact of national culture on organizations, international labour markets, convergence and divergence in HRM, resourcing and rewarding, employment flexibility, employee relations, employee voice, managing workplace diversity, strategic HRM, International assignments, the impact of the EU on HRM and future developments.

Sustainable Tourism

This module critically examines the concept of sustainability and its application to the tourist industry. It investigates some of the cost and benefits of tourism development in terms of its impacts on host communities and environments and analyses the ways in which sustainable principles have been applied within the industry. Planning for tourism at local, regional, national and international level will be appraised in terms of the application of these principles through a range of case studies.

Teaching and assessment

You'll learn through participation in lectures, seminars, practicals, workshops, group projects and fieldwork. Assessment methods, which include assignments, exams and individual project work, are focused upon the development of transferable skills which will provide practical benefit in your career.

If you are concerned about adapting to study at university level, then our Learning Development Group, (LDG) based in the Business School building offers a dedicated service helping our students to improve their academic skills in areas such as presentations skills, time-management, academic reading, referencing or academic writing, research for essay preparation and how to prepare effectively for examinations.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results.Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

Facilities

The Business School was opened in 2010 at a cost of £17m and is the most eco-friendly building on campus. It's a state-of-the art facility and provides you with a modern, professional environment in which to learn and develop. Located right next to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal it's in a leafy and picturesque location at the heart of the campus.

Excellent teaching rooms combine with fully-equipped computer labs to provide access to technology and learning resources alongside 'The Street' cafe which offers space for socialising, networking and relaxation over a wide selection of fresh food and hot and cold drinks.

How much will it cost me?

In 2017/18, the tuition fee for UK and EU students at the University of Huddersfield will be £9,250.
