About the course

This course is for those seeking a professional qualification in Career Guidance. You'll take the Qualification in Careers Guidance (QCG) - the nationally recognised professional qualification awarded by the Career Development Institute (CDI) - alongside the PgDip. You'll learn about policy, practice and theories underpinning career guidance, equality and diversity, partnership working and research based practice. A significant amount of your learning also takes place whilst on placement where you'll gain the practical skills to successfully work with adults and young people in the wide range of settings in which careers guidance is practiced. These include workplaces, the voluntary sector, higher and further education careers services, secondary education and the recently formed National Careers Service.For those successfully completing the PgDip, you can progress to complete the full MA qualification via completion of a dissertation.

This course is available on a one year full-time or two year part-time basis. Successful completion of the course results in the Career Development Institute approved career guidance professional qualification (the Qualification in Career Guidance or QCG). The course can lead to a wide variety of interesting and rewarding career prospects in career guidance companies, higher and further education careers and employability services, secondary education and third sector organisations. Course content

Courses start in Septemberand requires full-time students to attend on two days per week, as well as attendance at a work placement. For part-time students, the course requires attendance on one day per week and attendance at a work placement. The course is jointly taught with students studying for the Professional Studies (Youth and Community Work) Postgraduate Diploma/MA course.

Full-time course

Core modules:

+ Developing Professional Practice 1:Work with Individuals and Groups

This module will help you examine the professional roles of youth and community workers or careers guidance practitioners in order to enable students to develop as reflective practitioners who draw on developmental supervision. You'll consider the theory, principles and practice of working with individuals and with groups in youth and community work or careers guidance.


+ Inequality Inclusion and Critical Social Policy

This module will help you to understanding social inclusion, and the role of social policy in response to experiences of inequality, exclusion and marginalisation in modern British society. You'll address how greater social inclusion can be achieved through consideration of key social policy challenges such as poverty and inequality, social exclusion, welfare dependency, changing family structures, and globalisation, and specific modern social policy priority areas, such as educational and employment disadvantage and disengagement, youth crime, community cohesion and welfare to work.


+ The Guidance Network

This module will help you to examine the networks and contexts in which guidance work is carried out. You'll address underpinning theories of careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG), how these tie in with models of one to one and group interaction and how guidance is addressed in various learning settings.


+ Developing Professional Practice: Organisational Culture and Project Planning

This module will help you examine approaches to professional practice in a range of contexts. You'll consider the nature of the organisations within which the practice is located. The module allows you to develop practical skills and knowledge, using theoretical justification for developmental project-based work completed within the workplace / placement setting.

Upon successful completion of the PgDip course you have the option to progress onto our 1 year part-time Guidance Professional Studies MA course. This requires you to complete the dissertation module:

+ Dissertation

This module will deepen your knowledge and understanding of educational research. You'll learn about traditions of educational research; positivism, interpretism and action research and the strengths and challenges of carrying out research in these traditions. This module will provide you with the opportunity to carry out a piece of research based on a contemporary or work-related issue or problem.

Core modules:

Placements

The course involves a compulsory work placement consisting of a minimum of 30 days. Typically students are able to experience a placement involving a guidance agency and also within an education organisation e.g. a school/academy, or within Further/Higher Education. The aim of the placement is that students should have a wide ranging experience of information, advice and guidance provision and should be strongly involved in developing practical skills within the guidance sector.

Career opportunities

Guidance skills can be used in a variety of settings and graduates can expect to find employment in dedicated guidance or careers guidance agencies such as the National Careers Service or Higher and Further Education Careers and Employability Services. Graduates in recent years have also found employment in related areas such as voluntary and charitable agencies (e.g. mental health provision), secondary education and training providers.

Teaching and assessment

Our course offers a combination of teaching styles: lectures, tutorials, independent study and work based learning. Assessment is continuous and varied and includes written assignments, presentations and reports.

This varied and flexible approach helps meet the diverse learning needs and the busy lifestyles of our students.

Teaching staff come from relevant vocational backgrounds and have a wealth of experience and knowledge of the guidance world.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results. Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

How much will it cost me?
