English Language with Creative Writing BA(Hons) 2012-13

You have a passion for your language.You have a flair for expressing yourself in words, and you want to take this further, to make your talent work for you.This course gives you the chance to study the English language, and to apply what you learn to your own creativity, with expert support from staff who are actively engaged in writing and publishing.

• Your first year will be an exciting exploration of English language and creative writing. At the end of the year you have the flexibility to choose your preferred speciality for the rest of your degree.

• Your tutors are active in their own specialist areas of publishing and writing and recognised by the Higher Education Academy. You can be confident your studies are led by experts with flair and enthusiasm, renowned nationally for their excellence in teaching.

• Your learning will extend beyond the boundaries of the classroom. With huge events such as the Huddersfield Literature Festival Huddersfield Literature Festival, exciting concepts like graphic recording and poetry karaoke alongside educational trips to the British Library (History of English exhibition), your course will amaze, delight and encourage you.

You begin by exploring language as a system, from sound to sentence, and its development in history, after which you will concentrate on its relationship with society and its application in various fields. You will investigate real language in real life. Following an introduction to Creative Writing you will embark upon Writing Short Stories, concluding with a Creative Writing Project in your final year.

Year 1
Your studies will give you a descriptive and theoretical basis from which you can progress to higher level work. You will be introduced to various approaches to the study of language and to the description of English from sound to sentence with modules such as Introduction to Describing English and Approaches to Language Study. You will also consider the history of English, its development, and its use in different contexts, studying Introduction to Stylistics, and English Past and Present.You will also take the module Creative Writing.

Year 2
This year your study consists of advanced descriptive study of English phonology and grammar, investigations into the relationship between language and society (including English dialects)and choices from a range of topic-based modules, currently including Conversation Analysis, Child Language Acquisition, Stylistics, Phonetics and Phonology and Syntax. You will also take Writing Short Stories and Writing Beyond the Page.

Year 3
In your final year you will prepare a final year dissertation on a topic of your choice, selected from a range of specialist options based on academic staff research expertise. Options can include Language and Power, Language of Humour, Pragmatics, Bilingualism or Corpus Linguistics. You will also take Experiments in Narrative and the Creative Writing Project.

As an English graduate, you are valued for the advanced skills you have developed in communication, self-motivation, teamwork, analysis, creative problem solving and persuasiveness. Depending on your specialism, your career choices are as varied and exciting as your degree course. With the skills and confidence you have learned throughout your degree you will be well suited and prepared for a career in publishing, broadcasting, teaching, writing, advertising, management, politics and local government.

Teaching takes place in lectures and seminars supported by opportunities for individual feedback and consultation with staff. You are encouraged to participate in group and pair work and in presentations. Assessment includes essays, textual analyses, formal examinations and group presentation.
