- Those with formal qualifications should normally have at least 300 UCAS points, including a grade B at A level in any form of English (English Language, English Literature or the two combined).
- The standard entry level point is an A2 in French, German or Spanish. However, depending on your profile, it might be possible to start below this level as the MLC offers a wide range of modules. Please contact the Admissions Tutor to discuss.
- We welcome students of all ages. Applicants returning to education are required to show equivalent attainment.

You have a passion for literature and language, not just your own, and you recognise the need for understanding across national and cultural boundaries. You have developed your flair for languages, and your curiosity and ambition motivates you to take it much further, to make your talent work for you. This course gives you the chance to study English Literature alongside a modern language, with expert support from staff who are actively engaged in writing and publishing.
• Your first year will be an exciting exploration of English literature and a modern language. At the end of the year you have the flexibility to choose your preferred speciality for the rest of your degree.
• Your tutors are active in their own specialist areas of publishing and writing and recognised by the Higher Education Academy. You can be confident your studies are led by experts with flair and enthusiasm, renowned nationally for their excellence in teaching.
• As leading researchers in their fields of expertise, your course leaders are published authors, award-winners and acclaimed thinkers. 75% of work submitted for the most recent Research Assessment Exercise was said to be ‘internationally significant’ and ‘world leading’.
• Your learning will extend beyond the boundaries of the classroom, as literature is born of and transcends traditional boundaries. With huge events such as the Huddersfield Literature Festival Huddersfield Literature Festival, exciting concepts like graphic recording and poetry karaoke alongside educational trips to the British Library (History of English exhibition), your course will amaze, delight and encourage you.
You begin by exploring literary form and heritage, the relationship between literature and cultures, and the role literature plays in reflecting and contributing to the human experience. You will study on modules exploring the relationships between literature and film, literature and the material environment, and literature in dramatic productions.
You will have access to The Modern Language Centre PCs equipped with specialist language-learning software, and digital satellite television. The labs contain magazines, newspapers, reference books, audio and audiovisual materials.
Year 1
You will follow a programme of core modules in literature, covering literary genres (drama, poetry, narrative and film) as well as popular literature and film. You will also be introduced to critical approaches to literature, and to the historical and linguistic study of literary texts in the modules Introduction to Poetry and Drama, Approaches to Literature, Introduction to Stylistics and Introduction to Narrative.
In the modern language, you follow the Language in Context and Practical Language modules that help you develop your fluency and accuracy. There’s plenty of opportunity to practise the language.
Year 2
Your knowledge of literature will be broadened byfour core modules, each spanning a century of literary production. These range from the Renaissance to the present, Victorian Issues, 20th Century Fiction, The Romantic Period, Renaissance and Revolutions. You will also further your understanding of critical and cultural theory and continue the study of stylistics in either poetry or drama. In the modern language, you continue to develop your language skills and appreciation of contemporary social, cultural and other topics.
Year 3
You will write a dissertation on a chosen subject in consultation with staff, and study in-depth literature modules based around ourcontemporary research interests and specialisms. These currently range from Renaissance drama to modernism and from romanticism to postcolonial literature. There is also the option to study literature and film.These modules include Shakespeare andthe Renaissance Playwrights; Romantic Confessions; Modernism, Literature and the Arts; Colonial and Postcolonial Literature; Literature Through FilmAs you develop your skills and knowledge, you have the opportunity to study in more depth some of the areas that are of particular interest to you. By the time you graduate, you should have made great progress across all four skills and understand a lot more about the country too.
As an English graduate, you are valued for the advanced skills you have developed in communication, self-motivation, teamwork, analysis, creative problem solving and persuasiveness. Depending on your specialism, your career choices are as varied and exciting as your degree course. With the skills and confidence you have learned throughout your degree you will be well suited and prepared for a career in publishing, broadcasting, teaching, writing, advertising, management, politics and local government.
Teaching takes place in lectures and seminars supported by opportunities for individual feedback and consultation with staff. You are encouraged to participate in group and pair work and in presentations. Assessment includes essays, textual analyses, formal examinations and group presentation.
