CeReNeM’s research team brings together researchers and artists at the cutting edge of contemporary music performance, composition and new sonic media.  The Centre highlights inter-disciplinarity in all areas of research, fostering contexts in which creative cross-fertilisations can impact on technical and aesthetic innovation.

Music and Music technology research at the University of Huddersfield is recognized for its international reach as evidenced by results in the 2008 RAE where 95% of the submission was recognised as of international standing with 20% classified as ‘world leading’. 

Staff and postgraduates continue to build on this culture of excellence by being highly visible on the international stage with participation at key conferences and festivals (ICMC, NIME, Ultraschall Berlin, Festival d’Automne à Paris), major commissions (London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, Holland Festival, London Sinfonietta, Donaueschinger Musiktage) and publications (Ashgate, Continuum, Empreintes DIGITALes, Hat Hut Records and Neos).

CeReNeM’s research and industry partners include the renowned Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the Norwegian Centre for Technology in Music and the Arts and Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst, Graz.  Ensembles in residence include ELISION and EXAUDI. In 2011, the Centre successfully hosted the 37th International Computer Music Conference. 

The Centre is closely associated with two important archives held at the University of Huddersfield: the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and the British Music Information Centre archives.  CeReNeM’s own HCR CD and DVD label, online Journal and masterclass, seminar and concert series, enable the Centre to provide a vibrant platform for research, professional exchange and high quality postgraduate training.
