Graduate internships

Internships have become more widely used by recruiters in the past few years as a way to recruit graduates.
Internships are simply short periods of employment and are frequently used by employers to trial graduates.

Below are the answers to common questions about internships.

How long do internships last?

There is no fixed length for an internship. The average duration is 3 months but they can range from 8 weeks to 12 months.

How much do you get paid?

All internships offered by the University of Huddersfield pay £300 per week. Others pay as little as the minimum wage, the average wage is around £300 per week.

What are the benefits of doing an internship?

Internships give you the chance to gain professional experience and contacts, also prove your ability. They can often lead to long term employment.
Many employers offer internships as a way of giving graduates a trial to see how they  perform on the job

Do internships exploit students and graduates?

Like all jobs there are good and bad internships.

Before taking an internship you have to consider how valuable the experience will be and what it could lead onto.
Most internships should be paid and there is little justification for an employer not paying you if you are doing ‘real work’. For certain industries such as fashion, music and the ‘media’ unpaid internships’ are the accepted way people gain experience to get into the industry.

If you decide to take an unpaid internship you should be clear on the benefits you will gain, whether your expenses will be paid and what the prospects of gaining paid work are at a later date.

Many internships’ offered by the University of Huddersfield and Graduates Yorkshire have lead to permanent well paid roles. Some of these are also offered by large companies who pay a competitive salary.
