Changing or leaving your course
There are many reasons you could be considering changing course and it is important to discuss these with someone before making any final decisions. There are plenty of people and organisations who can help you through the decision-making process. The aim is to get a positive outcome for you. No matter what the issue is there may well be a solution, so please take your time and remember that you do not have to make your decision alone.
It is important that you continue to study and attend lectures whilst you are thinking about your options, it may be difficult to catch up if you do decide to stick with your current course.
- Speak to your Personal Tutor or Course Leader about your concerns, they may be able to help. Whatever your concern, academic staff are likely to have come across similar issues before. If you cannot get hold of the person you want to talk to, ask at the departmental office for an alternative contact. State your concerns as clearly as possible, it may help you to make notes before you go or take a friend with you if you feel you may become upset.
- Speak to a Careers Adviser. The Careers and Employability Service offers confidential and impartial careers information, advice and guidance. - Contact Student Finance contact details available at www2.hud.ac.uk/student_finance .All factors need to be taken into consideration when making a choice about your course, you need to fully understand the financial impact of your decision.
- If you are considering changing to another course within the University, try to speak to the Admissions Tutor for that course. You will need to know whether you meet the entry requirements for the course and whether there are places available. When contacting admissions tutors it is important to present yourself in a polite, professional and credible manner – they are the people who will determine your suitability for the course. If there are places on a course and you meet the entry criteria, it may be possible to do an internal transfer without going through UCAS www.ucas.ac.uk .This is, however, entirely at the discretion of the individual course staff and you may have to apply through UCAS. If you need help with this, please ask to see a careers adviser.
- Your decision may affect your accommodation. If your decision will mean moving from the Huddersfield area, you should contact your landlord or the DIGS accommodation office to establish the terms of your contract and what rent you will have to pay. The Students Union can help if you have problems with this.
- If you are considering changing to a course at a different University, you should search for courses on the UCAS website and contact the admissions staff there to make sure you meet the entry requirements and that there are places available.
