Interviews

An interview is an opportunity for an employer to find out more about you and discuss your application in more detail. It is also a good opportunity for you to find out more about the organisation, the type of work you will be doing and about career development opportunities.

Remember you don't get a second chance to make a first impression.

Online interviews

Preparing for online interviews

Attending online interviews
Some employers are now asking students to attend interviews online via Skype for example, whereby you will be speaking with an interviewer online via web cam.

Answering pre-recorded interview questions online

You may even be asked to sit a pre-recorded interview whereby the interviewer is not even present but you will be asked a series of questions and you will be asked to record your answers and upload them to a specific website / web link sent to you by the employer.

Uploading a sales pitch of yourself

You may even be asked to send a type of 'video CV' to the employer whereby you are asked to video yourself saying for example; why you want the job, why you are a suitable candidate and what you have to offer the organisation.

There are variations of online interviews now being used.

How to prepare

Regardless of the type of interview you will need to thoroughly prepare and you can do this by following the advice on this web page by reading our 'Interviews booklet' and watching the 'Interview preparation DVDs'. You can also contact the Careers and Employability Service and arrange to speak with a careers adviser to gain further information and advice.

  • Regarding preparation for online interviews then it is advisable to ensure that you are located somewhere quiet, free from disturbances. The employer will not be impressed if the interview is interrupted, it will look un-professional.
  • Ensure that your laptop is fully charged if you are using one.
  • Ensure that you have all of the details from the employer re: how and when the interview will take place, is there a specific website or software you need to access? Ensure that you can access this before the actual interview and contact the employer if you have any queries.

  • If you do not have access to a web cam in order to take plart in an online interview then you can contact the University Library and borrow a laptop, ensure that you specify that you need one with a web cam. It is unlikely that you will be able to take this off campus so you will also need to book a study room in the library where you can make your recordings or attend your online interview - ensure that you contact the University Library and arrange this in advance.
