The town of Barnsley

Barnsley is undergoing a continual transformation and fast becoming a cultural hotspot as well as an ideal place for all kinds of entertainment, sports and a thriving music scene.

Situated between Sheffield and Leeds, it is easy to reach those two cities with the benefit of being a lot easier on the pocket and full of easygoing and friendly locals. It has always had a strong emphasis on innovation and technology and this has been further enhanced by the opening of the Digital Media Centre (DMC). This state-of-the-art building was developed to support the success and development of creative, media and digital business; an ideal location for new graduates who are keen to launch their own business.

The general vibe in Barnsley is very student-friendly and the many bars, pubs and restaurants serve the student population well. Recent gigs in the town by artists such as Pete Doherty and Pendulum highlight the strength of the music scene there. This is supported by festivals and events such as Love Music Hate Racism and Barnsley Original Music Festival, held annually. For classical music in the town, look no further than events from Ensemble 360, a collection of musicians from across the globe who perform at events in the town.

The reopening of the Civic as an arts and entertainment venue gives Barnsley access to art, drama, musical and family entertainment in superb surroundings. The Cooper Gallery displays work by local artists and designers as well as exhibitions featuring renowned artists such as JMW Turner, Paul Nash, Henry Moore and John Atkinson Grimshaw. The Hive Gallery, based at Elsecar Heritage Centre, features a diverse rolling programme of contemporary visual art.

If theatre is your thing, The Lamproom and its packed schedule will appeal, featuring as it does many performances, both amateur and professional throughout the year.

Sports are widely enjoyed in Barnsley too with a number of leisure centres offering student discounts on membership fees. Barnsley FC may be familiar too, being the first football team to have their own Poet in Residence, a certain Ian McMillan, the local wordsmith.
