European Researchers' Night

The University of Huddersfield is giving you the chance to get your hands on this brownie fun badge, just by attending the Europeans Researchers' Night event.

It's a jam-packed night full of a variety of interactive workshops and exciting drop-in activities. Get involved with the range of competitions we're hosting too, more information can be found in the competition section about how to enter. 

Along with the brownie fun badge, our event also allows you to work towards obtaining your Science Investigator badge through participating in some of the activities we're hosting.

I bought a group of girl guides along to the event and they all enjoyed it and went away all excited. Feedback from parents has been very positive.

It was a fantastic evening with quite a few of the Brownies showing an interest in wanting to go to university and do research.

The University of Huddersfield is one of only a number of venues hosting the European Researchers’ Night here in the UK! This is a unique and free event welcoming families and people of all ages to find out what our researchers do and how it influences our daily lives. 

What is European Researchers’ Night?

European Researchers’ Night is a European Commission initiative which takes place in more than 300 cities across Europe in September every year.

Why do we have European Researchers’ Night?

It gives the public a chance to meet researchers and find out about their latest discoveries through a range of exciting activities and interactive workshops.

Where will this event be taking place?

The University of Huddersfield has secured funding to host the event. The entire university campus will be used as the venue, the majority of the activities are taking place inside so can be enjoyed whatever the weather.

What does the night include?

There’s something for everyone to get involved with ranging from hands-on experiments, science shows, learning activities for children, guided visits of research labs, science quizzes, competitions and much more.

Why should I get involved?

This is a valuable opportunity to gain an insight into what researchers do and understand the impact it has on our day-to-day lives. Not to mention the amazing prizes to be won through our competitions and giveaways on the night!

New Inventions Poem

If I were a Scientist or Inventor I would invent...

Open to:        7 - 11 year olds

Deadline:       Friday 22nd September 2017

Prizes to be announced on the night!

Thousands of new inventions are made every year by Scientists and Inventors! Compared to 10 years ago we now have touchscreen smartphones and drones that we can fly 20metres up into air whilst still being able to control it on the ground.

If you could invent something, what would it be? An ice cream that doesn’t melt? Or maybe shoe laces that fasten themselves? It can be anything! For this competition we want you to write about a new invention that you have come up with, in a poetry format. You can include pictures and drawings to illustrate your idea.

To enter the New Inventions Poetry Competition please do the following:

1. Download the application form
2. Read the terms and conditions
3. Get creative and produce your artwork
4. Complete the application form and either:

• Complete and return it by post, along with your art, to the address outlined in the form
• Complete electronically and return it via email with an electronic submission to researchersnight@hud.ac.uk
  
  

All finalists will have their poems exhibited on the night, the lucky winners will be presented with their rewards at the European Researchers' Night prize giving ceremonies on Friday 29 September.

Future Technology Poem

Technology of the Future, in 20 years' time...

Open to:        12 - 16 year olds

We’ve come a long way from the technology we used 20 years ago; all the way from flip phones to touchscreen devices and Desktop PCs to lightweight laptops. It’s through the aid of researchers and the research they undertake that allow us to make rapid breakthroughs in the development of technology.

In a poetry format, write about what technologies you think will be available 20 years from now. How do you envision the development of technology to look like in 20 years’ time? It can be anything from cars that drive themselves, to a smartphone that only needs charging once a month!

To enter the Future Technology Poem Competition please do the following:

3. Get creative and create your acrostic poem
4. Complete the application form and either:

• Complete and return it by post, along with your art, to the address outlined in the form

Five Sense Photography 

Illustrate one of the five senses through photography; sight, sound, taste, touch and smell.

Open to:        11 - 15 year olds and 16-18 year olds

Deadline:       Friday 22nd September 2017

Prizes to be announced on the night!

For this competition you can use your smartphone or camera to capture an image representing one or a combination of the five senses. It can be anything from the sight and sound portrayed by a busy road, to the smell of a flower in the garden. 

Use your imagination and try experimenting by shooting from an unexpected angle to reveal a new perspective and create an edgy piece of art.
